About The Position

Public Citizen’s Congress Watch division seeks a Federal Big Tech Accountability Advocate to help lead cutting-edge federal advocacy campaigns focused on artificial intelligence (AI), data privacy, platform accountability, surveillance, competition policy, and emerging technologies. This position will play a central role in advancing Public Citizen's federal technology policy agenda by combining strategic advocacy, policy analysis, coalition building, communications, research, and lobbying to promote meaningful oversight of the technology industry and stronger protections for consumers and civil rights. The Federal Big Tech Accountability Advocate will report to the Director of Federal AI Governance and Technology Policy and the Congress Watch Director and will work closely with the Big Tent AI Coalition and a broad network of civil society organizations, researchers, academics, and policymakers to advance federal technology policy reforms.

Requirements

  • College degree required.
  • 1-10 years of relevant in advocacy, public policy, government, law, technology, research, journalism, or related fields, with a preference given to those with specific expertise on AI, AI governance, technology product safety, trust and safety, platform accountability, and/or technical expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex technology and legal issues into clear, persuasive communications for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, respond to short-term deadlines and balance multiple responsibilities; maintain strong attention to detail and accuracy; and be persistent.
  • A commitment to collaboration, humility, professionalism, and hard work.
  • Mission-driven, enjoy working as part of a team, and can balance serious advocacy with a collegial and supportive workplace.

Nice To Haves

  • Masters or Legal degree preferred.
  • Specific expertise on AI, AI governance, technology product safety, trust and safety, platform accountability, and/or technical expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Director of Federal AI Governance and Technology Policy, the Congress Watch Director and Managing Director, Public Citizen leadership, and colleagues across the organization to develop and execute federal advocacy strategies related to artificial intelligence, privacy, surveillance, platform accountability, competition policy, and emerging technologies.
  • Develop and implement legislative, regulatory, and advocacy campaigns before Congress and federal agencies on issues involving AI governance, technology accountability, consumer protection, and corporate power.
  • Coordinate Public Citizen's participation in the Big Tent AI Coalition and maintain strong relationships with coalition partners, academic experts, civil society organizations, labor organizations, consumer advocates, and other stakeholders.
  • Monitor and track congressional activity, federal agencies, industry developments, and emerging technology trends to identify advocacy opportunities and develop timely policy responses.
  • Produce reports, policy analyses, white papers, fact sheets, testimony, comment letters, blog posts, op-eds, and other written materials for policymakers, journalists, coalition partners, and the public.
  • Draft and submit agency comments, petitions, complaints, congressional correspondence, oversight requests, sign-on letters, and other advocacy materials, while coordinating strategic follow-up efforts.
