About The Position

This position is for a Full-Time FDR Social Worker within the Fraser Valley, serving the Langley, Mission, and Abbotsford communities. The role operates out of the Mission Base Office and is part of the FDR Delegated Team 2. The agency, Xyólheméylh, is a fully delegated Indigenous Children & Family Services Agency dedicated to promoting Indigenous culture and values while working with Indigenous children, youth, and families. Services are culturally appropriate, community-based, and aligned with the BC Child, Family and Community Services Act and Aboriginal Operational and Practice Standards and Indicators (AOPSI). The Social Worker will be the primary contact for child protection reports, collaborating with families, community members, Elders, and other supports in case planning and service delivery. Responsibilities include Family Development Response, Protective and Voluntary Family Service, and Guardianship. The role requires participation in community events and ceremonies and an understanding of Community Protocols. The agency is supported by an Elders Advisory Council to ensure cultural integration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Social Work Degree, Child and Youth Care Degree or a Social Sciences degree
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the human services field would be an asset.
  • A combination of related education in a human services field and experience may be accepted.
  • Must be delegated or able/willing to attend training for C6 delegation in the province of B.C.
  • Ability to practice standards set out in the Child Protection Response Policies, B.C. Child, Family and Community Services Act, and the Aboriginal Operational and Practice Standards and Indicators (AOPSI) Manual.
  • Awareness of the B.C. Benefits Act; B.C. Adoptions Act; B.C. Family Relations Act; Young Offenders Act; and other pertinent provincial and federal legislation.
  • Ability to practice standards set out in Good Recording Guide.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of Indigenous culture and how culture impacts in the development of individuals and communities; and Indigenous culture in general and history in particular.
  • Understanding of cross-cultural issues as they affect children in care, foster parents, biological parents and communities of origins.
  • Practical knowledge of federal, provincial and indigenous organizations mandated to provide health, counseling and child and family services.
  • Strong understanding of agency policies and procedure manuals.
  • Computer literacy on databases, Microsoft Word, Excel and other computer software.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License (no restrictions); reliable transportation with adequate vehicle insurance.
  • Criminal Records Check is a requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Provide culturally appropriate and responsive community-based services within the parameters of the BC Child, Family and Community Services Act and the Aboriginal Operational and Practice Standards and Indicators (AOPSI).
  • Support communities in building preventative programming to strengthen their capacity in protecting, supporting, and planning for children.
  • Act as the first point of contact for child protection reports.
  • Work in partnership with Families, Community Members, Band Designates, identified Elders, and other identified supports in all Case Planning and Service Delivery decisions.
  • Provide services within the realm of Family Development Response, Protective and Voluntary Family Service, and Guardianship.
  • Become knowledgeable of and competent in the practice of Community Protocols.
  • Participate in important Community events and ceremonies.
