The purpose of the Farrowing Technician is to perform the daily duties associated with farrowing production issues. This role involves assisting with the preparation of pre-farrow rooms, inducing sows, executing proper farrowing, and ensuring day-one pig care. The technician will identify piglets needing a nurse sow or litter swap, assist in ensuring piglets are with the correct sow and crate, and perform movements of animals as directed. Responsibilities also include treating and vaccinating sows and piglets, keeping crates full of lactating sows, processing and castrating piglets, and feeding lactating sows per protocol. Additionally, the role involves assisting with accurate documentation, power washing, and advocating for SFI's animal welfare policy. The technician must ensure compliance with SFI training programs, safety standards, PQA certification, and bio-security policies. Strong teamwork and the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. are essential. Maintenance duties include following bio-security protocols, maintaining barn cleanliness, adjusting heat lamps, reporting ventilation concerns, and performing assigned maintenance tasks to ensure a safe work environment.
