About The Position

HTM Insurance is looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Farm Underwriter to join our team. Reporting to the Vice President, Underwriting, you will support the underwriting team in processing new and existing farm business, including endorsements and renewals. This role is ideal for someone early in their insurance career who is eager to build specialized knowledge in farm underwriting.

Requirements

  • College diploma or university degree in business, administration, or insurance-related field
  • 1–3 years of experience in the insurance industry or office administration
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines

Nice To Haves

  • Enrollment in or willingness to pursue the CIP (Chartered Insurance Professional) designation
  • Experience in underwriting (property, auto, or farm)
  • Familiarity with mutual insurance systems
  • Understanding of the insurance industry, particularly the mutual system
  • Knowledge of policy wordings and underwriting principles
  • Familiarity with farm operations and farm rating (an asset)

Responsibilities

  • Process endorsements, cancellations, and new business within established service standards (five-day turnaround)
  • Enter and update policy data accurately in internal systems
  • Review insured history, including claims and prior underwriting decisions
  • Review inspections, photos, and supporting documentation; communicate concerns to brokers
  • Follow up to ensure risk improvement recommendations are completed
  • Assist with full farm submissions, including coverage selection (property, machinery, livestock, liability, etc.)
  • Order inspections and identify key areas of concern
  • Run weekly batch renewals for farm policies
  • Review underwriting “stops” (e.g., claims or risk changes) and make appropriate adjustments
  • Order inspections and take necessary follow-up actions
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with broker partners
  • Respond to broker inquiries via phone and email, providing timely and accurate support
  • Prepare correspondence including memos, emails, and letters to brokers and insureds
  • Review inspections and communicate risk concerns and recommendations
  • Monitor and correct system data errors on a daily basis
  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and industry events
  • Accompany inspectors on large farm operations when required
  • Contribute to underwriting discussions and team initiatives
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
