About The Position

Frederick County Department of Social Services is one of the 120 locally-administered, state-supervised agencies who work in partnership with the Virginia Department of Social Services to help those in our community most in need. Our mission is to deliver client centered, quality human services that help the citizens of Frederick County achieve safety, independence, and overall well-being. This position supervises Child Protective Services staff that provide direct services for fostering and sustaining the social, health, economics, behavioral, and emotional functioning of individuals and families serviced by the Local Departments of Social Services. Position supervises, trains, leads, and develops staff and monitors case management services.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a Human Services field or minimum of Bachelor’s degree in any field and a minimum of two years of appropriate and related experience in a Human Services area (Section 22VAC40-670-20 of Administrative Code of Virginia).
  • Considerable knowledge of principals and practices of effective supervision
  • Considerable knowledge of policies, procedures and regulations relating to the various direct service programs
  • Considerable knowledge of the literature in the field of human services programs
  • Considerable knowledge of casework supervision principles and practices
  • Considerable knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services to include needs and assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of satisfaction
  • Considerable knowledge of employment and/or social work principals, practices and treatment modalities
  • Considerable knowledge of social, economic, health and employment problems that face individuals, groups and communities
  • Considerable experience in Child Protective Services and / or Foster Care Child Services programs
  • Completion or required training programs
  • Skill in operating a personal computer and the associated software
  • Skill in the operation of a motor vehicle
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and manage work activities and assist others in their planning management
  • Demonstrated ability to develop programs and procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions in difficult situations
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Demonstrated ability to apply treatment and intervention approaches
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret laws, policies and regulations regarding human services, ensure compliance and recommend needed changes
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise others working with clients
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze situations to make sound judgments within the framework of existing laws, policies, and regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to train, evaluate, lead and develop subordinate staff
  • Experience working with community partners such as law enforcement, school system, community services board, private service providers, county administrator and Board of Supervisors, Community Policy and Management team, faith-based entities, civic groups and organizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Supervisory experience or work experience in a leadership role.
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Possession of a BSW or MSW degree.
  • Commonwealth of Virginia Social Worker license.
  • MSW degree is highly desirable.
  • Supervisory experience in Child Protective Services and or Foster Care knowledge of policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge in public assistance and social service programs.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises social workers, assistants and others
