About The Position

Performs difficult professional work supervising a unit of Family Services Specialists and/or Senior Family Services Specialists assigned to a specialized unit, (e.g., foster care or child protective services) or a unit which provides the full range of family services. Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in social work, psychology, counseling or other human services field.
  • Extensive experience as a Family Services Specialist or related position.
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license with good driving record.
  • Thorough knowledge of supervisory principles and techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of employment and/or social work principles, practices and treatment modalities and of social, economic, health and employment problems that face individuals, groups and communities.
  • General knowledge of human behavior.
  • Ability to plan and manage work activities of subordinates and assist others in their planning and management.
  • Ability to develop programs and procedures.
  • Ability to make decisions in difficult situations involving critical issues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Skill in the application of treatment and intervention approaches.
  • Ability to interpret laws, policies and regulations regarding human services, ensure compliance and recommend needed changes.
  • Skilled in use of personal computer.
  • Subject to a complete criminal history and Child Protective Services background search with acceptable results.
  • Must be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description.
  • Must be able to perform job duties outside of normal working hours, which may include being on-call twenty-four hours a day, including weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Interviews applicants for positions and makes hiring recommendations.
  • Supervises staff providing direction, assigning work and establishing performance goals/objectives.
  • Conducts performance reviews and handles disciplinary issues.
  • Identifies training needs and mentors family services specialists in all aspects of case management and service planning in all social work programs including APS and Self Sufficiency.
  • Sets and enforces objectives for quality and quantity of work performed by unit, monitoring program statistics.
  • Establishes unit procedures to align with program policy.
  • Maintains current knowledge of appropriate program policy, interprets policy to internal and external customers.
  • Evaluates family services programs and program budgets.
  • Recommends policy changes based on evaluation of effectiveness.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Participates in community and state task forces, committees and boards; and/or, participates in community events related to foster care recruitment and adoption in order to create and enhance community resources which may require some travel.
  • Prepares and participates in program audits and reviews.
  • Deals with constituent concerns.
  • Directs staff in managing case crises.
  • Serves as On Call supervisor on rotating basis.
  • Manages special projects as needed.
