About The Position

The Community Services Worker provides support to Admin and Food Bank operations. This is a temporary full-time position for 8 weeks, requiring 35 hours per week. The role involves assisting clients with intake and assessment, supporting food bank operations including donation processing and stock management, and maintaining accurate client records. The position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program and requires applicants to meet eligibility criteria.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in Post Secondary Community College or University program
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a vulnerable sector check search.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications related to position responsibilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of barriers confronted by people who are disenfranchised, including, but not limited to people living in poverty, with mental health concerns, addictions and/or experiencing homelessness is an asset.
  • Knowledge of community-based resources and experience networking with community based agencies is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with conducting intake services and client assessment to determine immediate needs and supports required by the client.
  • Assist other food bank staff with pick-ups of food donations from community donors.
  • Aid with processing, unloading, documenting, sorting, reorganizing, and re-stocking food for the Family Services program and assist with preparing donated items for distribution.
  • Maintain food bank stock, cleanliness, tidiness, and organization of the food bank area; assist with food drives as needed.
  • Arrange for the proper disposal of items received but not usable in the food bank.
  • Work with volunteers as assigned.
  • Maintain written records, logs of activities, including activity reports and statistical information.
  • Maintain accurate records of client information in Link2Feed and on The Salvation Army’s computer system while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Follow direction on the compliance and adherence to Operating Policies and Procedures (e.g., gift cards, vouchers, etc.).
