About The Position

The Family Peer Advocate will support families and caregivers with children in the Youth and Family department by offering guidance, resources, and advocacy based on shared lived experiences. The advocate will assist families in accessing services, understanding their rights, and connecting with community resources. They will work closely with healthcare professionals, social workers, and other agencies to ensure that families receive the support and services they need.

Requirements

  • Provisional Family Peer Advocate Credential (PFPA) must be obtained within 12 months of hire
  • Family Peer Advocate Credential must be obtained within 18 months of receiving the Provisional Family Peer Advocate credential.
  • Sedentary work - Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Responsibilities

  • Empower families by providing education on system navigation, rights, and services, while promoting active participation in their child's care and fostering positive behavioral strategies.
  • Make referrals, facilitate access to services, conduct assessments to identify gaps, and provide support in various community settings including homes.
  • Lead parent education, facilitate peer advocate training, and collaborate with providers and multidisciplinary teams to enhance family-driven practices and system responsiveness.
  • Maintain required documentation, obtain/maintain OMH-approved credentials, participate in supervision and training, and support multiple sites based on departmental needs.
