About The Position

Families come to us during some of the hardest moments of their lives: divorce, custody disputes, support issues, protection orders. They need advocates who are strategic, steady and caring. We’re looking for an experienced family law paralegal to be a central part of that team. Steve Smith Trial Lawyers is a growing trial firm with decades of combined experience in family law, civil litigation, criminal defense and probate. Requirements

3–5 years of paralegal or high-level legal assistant experience, with significant family law experience
Familiarity with Maine court rules and procedures, especially in family matters
Strong drafting, writing and research skills
The ability to juggle multiple cases without letting details slip
Empathy and professionalism with clients in stressful situations, and strict respect for confidentiality
Proficiency in Microsoft Office

Nice To Haves

Clio experience is a plus
An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Paralegal Studies, Legal Studies or a related field (preferred)

Responsibilities

Manage family law matters at every stage, including divorce, parental rights and responsibilities, child and spousal support, and post-judgment modifications
Draft pleadings, motions, discovery, financial statements and settlement agreements
Organize financial disclosures and prepare timelines, summaries and trial exhibits
Prepare for hearings, mediations and trials, including assembling evidence and witness materials
Keep clients informed and supported with clear, compassionate communication
Coordinate with courts and opposing counsel, manage filings, and keep calendars and deadlines on track
Conduct legal research and track billable time accurately
