The STEPS Criminalized Survivors Program is an anti-intimate partner violence program that offers trauma-informed, anti-oppressive programming focused on preventing intimate partner violence (IPV), providing advocacy and healing for survivors and children impacted by abusive partner behavior, and training to increase awareness of gender-based violence. The program has been dedicated to innovative and survivor-centered work for over 30 years, emphasizing that support for survivors must align with anti-oppressive, anti-racist, feminist/womanist principles to be effective and avoid re-traumatization. The program offers comprehensive clinical and legal support services to survivors of IPV or other forms of gender-based violence (GBV) who have been criminalized for their efforts to survive or resist abusive partner behavior, supporting survivors facing felony and/or misdemeanor charges in any borough. The program also has designated Advocates/Counselors on-site at the Manhattan and Brooklyn Family Justice Centers and a Training team that leads the City's response to criminalized survivors.
