About The Position

This role involves designing, implementing, and monitoring health and wellness programs for parents and staff, providing support for children's social, emotional, and mental health, and ensuring compliance with various regulations and standards. The specialist will also be responsible for staff development, maintaining child health records, and fostering partnerships between program staff and families.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED
Two (2) years of experience in serving young children and their families.
Additional experience in the areas of early childhood education, special education, speech pathology, or health services.
Demonstrated ability to effectively read, write, speak, and understand English at a level necessary to perform job responsibilities, communicate clearly and professionally with students, families, coworkers, and community partners, comprehend written instructions and policies, prepare required documentation, and participate in meetings, training, and organizational communications.
Knowledge of applicable state and federal Head Start regulations, performance standards and guidelines.
Knowledge of the principles, practice, and procedures of mental health program administration.
Knowledge of mental health resources available within the community, state, and federal government.
Demonstrated proficiency in collecting data, preparing reports, monitoring progress, and analyzing data.
Strong written and oral communication skills to communicate with a diverse audience, including individuals with low health literacy.
Sound judgment in the protection of confidential information.
Ability to organize and prioritize duties and responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to work independently.
Possess sensitivity to the service population’s cultural and socio-economic characteristics.
Possess a valid driver’s license

Successfully pass driving history check
Clear criminal background check
Required to lift up to 60 pounds.
Required to stand, sit on the floor, bend, squat, kneel, lift children, and engage with children.
Exposure to communicable diseases, and other hazards such as cigarette smoke, pets, at risk neighborhoods, etc.

Travel up to 50% by car, bus, airplane, or train may also be required associated with attendance at conferences, meetings and other duties carried out at distant locations in and out of state and in some cases where some overnight travel may be required.
Some evenings and weekend work may occasionally be required for events such as home visits, parent teacher conferences, Parent Committee meetings, community, and social events such as field trips.

Responsibilities

Design, implement, and monitor a health and wellness program to help parents and staff understand physical and mental health and wellbeing, as well as access to interventions and referral, as needed.
Implement strategies for effective classroom management and positive learning environments; supportive teacher practices; and strategies for supporting children with challenging behaviors and other social, emotional, and mental health concerns.
Provide appropriate referrals to ensure training and technical assistance for program staff on mental health and disability service delivery in accordance with state and federal regulations.
Ensure appropriate practices to keep children safe during all activities, including reporting suspected or known child abuse and neglect, appropriate supervision of children at all times, and all standards of conduct.
Support staff development and well-being, including completion of minimum training requirements, continuing professional development, and staff wellness initiatives.
Ensure referrals and assessments are completed according to parameters and timeframes specified in agency, state, and federal policy and regulations.
Monitor child health and nutrition records to ensure all are current, organized, complete, and compliant.
Establish a schedule of oversight to apply to delivery of nutrition services to ensure compliance with Head Start Program Performance Standards, USDA requirements, and licensing standards.
Establish a schedule of sufficient and consistent frequency to ensure a partnership between program staff and families in a timely and effective manner.
Complete assessments and, if necessary, referrals according to parameters and timeframes specified in agency, state, and federal policy and regulations.
Prepare and submit required reports prior to deadlines.
Serve as Safety Officers and actively promote a safe, secure, and healthy environment for students, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
Develop and monitor compliance of child program files, including compliance with confidentiality.
Ensure the availability of specialized supplies and equipment as needed for children with disabilities.
Facilitate and monitor referrals to outside agencies for children with mental health and disability needs as requested.
Attend Individual Family Service Plan (FSP) and Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings, home visits, and parent conferences for children with mental health and disability needs.
