About The Position

University Settlement partners with over 40,000 New Yorkers in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn annually, aiming to help individuals achieve healthy, stable, and remarkable lives. University Settlement has a long-standing history of providing effective, strengths-based community programs for children in grades K-8th. The Activity Specialist will be responsible for facilitating workshops, ensuring the safety and engagement of children, and supporting academic, artistic, athletic, cultural, and therapeutic services, while also fostering family involvement.

Requirements

  • Previous experience teaching or facilitating workshops in one of the subject areas.
  • High School Diploma or HSE required.
  • Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Attend planning, supervisor, and evaluation sessions.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to commit for the entire school year.
  • Must be over 18 years old.
  • Highly energetic, dynamic, and positive demeanor.

Responsibilities

  • Work with groups of 15-20 students.
  • Facilitate sessions in areas such as dance, music, leadership, sports, ESL, visual arts, and computer skills.
  • Integrate young people's life experiences into thematic curriculum.
  • Create an environment of active and genuine learning using diverse teaching strategies to meet all students' needs.
  • Incorporate career awareness activities, including field trips and guest speakers, into projects.
  • Engage in community outreach and involvement.
  • Write, revise, and implement lesson plans according to the DYCD framework for director approval.
  • Monitor and report on student progress throughout the activity term.
