Failure Analysis Engineer

Meta•Fremont, CA
•$144,000 - $204,000

About The Position

Join Meta’s centralized Product Integrity Team and help build a failure analysis framework from the ground up to scale current services and support long-term goals related to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). The role involves working on projects such as custom ASICs and physical AI, while strengthening failure analysis relationships with worldwide suppliers and manufacturers. You will apply knowledge of system hardware, electrical engineering, and materials analysis to investigate failures and deliver end-to-end analysis leading to corrective actions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Materials Science.
  • At least 6 years of failure analysis experience.
  • Hands-on experience with SEM, p-FIB, mechanical polishing, dicing, EDS, mechanical probing, EBIC/EBAC, OBIRCH, LADA, and TIVA.
  • Experience applying a systematic failure analysis approach to break down a system or process, isolate failures, and troubleshoot to the component level.
  • Experience using electrical failure analysis equipment, including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, frequency generators, source meters, and multimeters.

Nice To Haves

  • Fault localization skills for custom silicon or ASICs.
  • Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering or Materials Science, with direct data center hardware failure analysis experience.
  • Experience analyzing data center failures involving rack-level hardware and/or data center infrastructure hardware.
  • Fault localization skills for PCIe Gen 5/6 and DDR Gen 5/6.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize or redesign workflows and drive measurable impact, such as efficiency gains or quality improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and characterize failures in data center hardware and determine their root causes.
  • Work with cross-functional teams across disciplines to determine or discuss root causes.
  • Use failure analysis equipment, including optical and digital microscopes, oscilloscopes, X-ray, and SEM, to complete projects.
  • Work with Hardware Reliability teams to root-cause reliability failures.
  • Recreate and identify failures observed in engineering, production, and the field to support efficient fault isolation.
  • Debug thermal-related PCB and electrical module failures.
  • Develop and validate corrective actions for failures using Physics of Failure methodology.
  • Take steps to prevent similar issues from recurring in new product introduction (NPI) programs.
  • Collaborate across hardware teams to advance and deploy new technologies in data centers.
  • Quantify failure analysis outcomes in terms of yield, reliability, serviceability, manufacturability, testability, capacity, and cost improvements when needed.
  • Validate and verify supplier and vendor failure analysis.
  • Create standard operating procedures (SOPs) so vendors and suppliers can repeat failure analysis when needed.
  • Organize the lab and maintain detailed documentation to produce effective failure analysis reports.
