About The Position

The Faculty Specialist position is available at the Department of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Maryland (UMD) College Park. The department is home to excellent scientists in human and veterinary microbiology and infectious diseases, providing an excellent research environment and advanced research facilities, including BSL3/ABSL3 suites, to support cutting-edge infectious diseases research. The Pal Lab, led by Dr. Utpal Pal, focuses on the biology of tick-borne infections, with an emphasis on Lyme disease and host-pathogen interactions, aiming to develop novel strategies for prevention and treatment. The laboratory's primary research focus is on the Borrelia burgdorferi pathogen, responsible for Lyme disease, and the Ixodes scapularis deer ticks that harbor and transmit the bacteria.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in biology, biomedical sciences, or relevant areas.
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in research programs on tick-borne infections focusing on Lyme disease.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on tick-borne infections, focusing on Lyme disease and host-pathogen interactions.
  • Develop novel strategies for the prevention and treatment of Lyme disease.
  • Work with the Borrelia burgdorferi pathogen and Ixodes scapularis deer ticks.
  • Utilize BSL3/ABSL3 suites and other advanced research facilities.
  • Collaborate with other scientists in the Department of Veterinary Medicine.
