About The Position

Austin Community College (ACC) is seeking an innovative, student-centered, and industry-experienced professional to join their team as a Full-Time GIS Faculty member. This role supports learning across various modalities including on-campus, online, and a hybrid flexible approach. The GIS Faculty will teach introductory through advanced GIS courses, preparing and delivering coursework in engaging, innovative, and discipline-appropriate ways that foster student success and create an environment of belonging. The ideal candidate will have significant patience for beginners, a strong enthusiasm for GIS, and the drive to develop the program into a leading regional workforce resource. This position is primarily in-person and is set to begin in January 2027.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a geospatial or earth science field and three years of non-teaching GIS work experience; OR Master's degree with 18 graduate hours in geography or geospatial coursework.
Three years of non-teaching, industry-related work experience within the GIS industry.

Dynamic, non-traditional instructional delivery methods to teach students of widely varying levels of proficiency and from various backgrounds and abilities.

Experience using technology as an instructional aide where appropriate to enhance learning.
Documented experience with active and applied teaching and learning methodologies.
A strong commitment to teaching in a community college setting, including teaching practices that reflect an understanding of the multicultural classroom and the benefits of cultural awareness and sensitivity in the classroom and the workplace.

Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to maintain an established schedule, including evenings and weekends, including possible multiple campus locations that may vary by semester.
Understanding of what it means to teach in a community college environment that serves often underprepared and underserved students.

Responsibilities

Prepare and teach courses in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to a diverse student population, adhering to approved course learning outcomes and utilizing varied instructional strategies suitable for community college students and the discipline's standards.
Actively participate in departmental responsibilities and governance, including curriculum review and revision, program review, assessment of student learning outcomes, and other departmental activities.
Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback aligned with program learning outcomes and departmental expectations.
Serve as a mentor to students within the GIS program.
Provide teaching and mentoring services without discrimination based on protected categories.
Maintain current knowledge in the field through professional development activities.
Support division and department goals through active and collegial engagement in decision-making and unit-level planning.
Serve on collegewide and departmental committees, councils, work groups, and task forces.
Perform other related tasks as assigned by department leadership.
Support program recruitment efforts, including high school outreach, community career fairs, and marketing the program to increase enrollment.
Demonstrate proficiency using computer applications, online resources, and other classroom technologies.
Demonstrate proficiency using an online learning management system (e.g., Blackboard) for course development and administrative duties.
Demonstrate proficiency using Esri desktop and cloud GIS, mobile data collection apps (Field Maps, Survey123), web mapping applications (Dashboards, Experience Builder), and related technologies.
Adhere to the appropriate use of the college's learning management system.
Meet deadlines for attendance certification and submission of final course grades.
Participate in graduation, general assembly, and other official college functions.
Maintain regular office hours to assist students and enhance student retention and success.
Attend and participate in collegewide, campus, department, or other relevant activities and meetings.
Exhibit standards of civility and collegiality in all interactions.
Comply with published college policies and procedures and meet professional teaching standards for a community college.
Maintain confidentiality of student information.
