About The Position

The Alabama Greece Initiative (https://greece.barefield.ua.edu) is seeking a Faculty Director to manage the Alabama Greece Initiative for the AY 2026-2027. This is an internal search within the Barefield College of Arts and Sciences (BCAS). The Director will report to the BCAS Dean and must be a full-time faculty, with teaching and research responsibilities in any of the BCAS Departments. We seek a director who is enthusiastic in supporting and managing trips to collaborate with faculty and students at our partner institutions in Greece, which include Aristotle University in Thessaloniki (AUTh), and Ionian University (IU) in both Corfu and Zakynthos. The Director must be willing to plan travel for faculty (including pre-trip orientation) and purchase flights, plan itineraries, and manage all financial, legal and diplomatic aspects of the trip. Further, the Director will assist with planning itineraries, events, and travel for faculty and students from our partner universities who visit UA. The Director must work closely with the UA Office of Research to ensure export control compliance is maintained as well as with the UA Capstone International Center International risk management to ensure proper travel regulations and safety are followed. We also expect the Director to work closely with the heads of International Relations and relevant faculty at our partner institutions. BCAS is home to the long-standing Alabama-Greece Initiative, a partnership with Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), a major research university in Greece’s second-largest city, as well as a collaboration with Ionian University (IU), located in the Ionian Islands. The relationship with AUTh is one of our longest standing international partnerships and our newest partnership resulted from the BCAS participation and support in the IIE IAPP Greece Program. Through the Alabama Greece Initiative, faculty and students routinely engage in academic collaborations, including faculty research and creative activity exchange and student internship opportunities. The Alabama Greece Initiative is an effort to develop a formal, cross-disciplinary collaborative relationship with our partner universities in Greece The Director will also communicate the trips to faculty and oversee the selection of participants. The Director will be responsible for follow-up activities, including reports, speaker series, and website maintenance. This part-time position reports to Dean and may be continued for an additional year. A stipend will be provided as well as either coverage for all Department and University service requirements or a course release.

Requirements

  • Tenured/Tenure-Track Faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences
  • Full-time faculty with teaching and research responsibilities in any of the BCAS Departments.
  • Must have a current passport.
