About The Position

Austin Community College's High School Equivalency (HSE/GED®) program provides academic classes designed to prepare adult learners to pass their GED exams and earn a state-recognized credential. The program covers core test subjects—Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies—while integrating direct pathways to higher education and workforce training. Instructors focus on building academic confidence and practical skills, equipping students with the tools needed for long-term career advancement and post-secondary success.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, Math, Curriculum Design, or a related field
1 year experience teaching varied student populations, including ESL/ELL/ESOL, K-12, adult education, and higher education.
OR At least 3 graduate hours in an appropriate education course focused on adult learners, educational psychology, teaching developmental courses, or educational methods.
Knowledge of adult learning theory and instructional methods
A strong commitment to engaging in classroom and online management best practices
Awareness of Texas College and Career Readiness Standards
Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
Ability to build positive working relationships and serve as a student role model
Ability to exhibit creativity, patience, and flexibility in teaching approaches
Ability to apply ethics, integrity, and sound professional judgment.
A commitment to establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with students, colleagues, and staff representing multicultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Dynamic, non-traditional instructional delivery methods to teach students of widely varying levels of proficiency and from various backgrounds and abilities.

Experience using technology as an instructional aide, where appropriate, to enhance learning.
Documented experience with active and applied teaching and learning methodologies.

Ability to teach evenings and weekends
Ability to teach in person at any ACC campus and online
Valid Texas driver’s license and reliable transportation for local travel
Work is performed in the classroom, ACCelerator labs, or online environments.
Requires extended standing, walking, sitting, and reaching.
Occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

Prepare and teach GED-aligned Math and/or Language Arts courses for a multicultural student population, aligned with approved learning outcomes.
Design, review, and refine comprehensive HSE/GED curricula including goal-setting, collaborating with and supporting and mentoring colleagues in effective implementation.
Evaluate the effectiveness of current practices and make data-driven adjustments to foster student success.
Guide and support students through the GED.com experience. Support GED Ready and other GED related events as needed.
Apply best practices in classroom and online management to promote accessibility, engagement, and retention.
Participate actively in departmental responsibilities and governance, including curriculum review/revision, program review, and course/program-level learning outcome assessments.
Provide accessible and individualized academic support, including one-on-one assistance.
In collaboration with SCR teams, assist with assessment and enrollment of HSE/GED students, providing placement, enrollment, application, proficiency/progress testing, and related support.
Maintain attendance, grading, and blackboard in a timely manner.
Serve as a mentor to new faculty in the HSE/GED program.
Collaborate with program leaders, faculty, and coordinators to support student achievement
Maintain a positive, and culturally responsive classroom environment
Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback reflecting program learning outcomes and departmental expectations.
Provide teaching and mentoring services to students in a manner that does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, protected veteran status, political affiliation, or other protected categories.
Remain current in the field through a variety of professional development activities.
Perform other related tasks as assigned by the department chair, dean, and/or associate vice chancellor, vice chancellor, or executive vice chancellor.
Demonstrated proficiency using computer applications, online resources, video creation, and other technologies for the classroom.
Demonstrated proficiency using an online learning management system such as Blackboard Ultra to develop and build course content and perform administrative duties (posting office hours, syllabi, etc.).
Appropriate use of the college's learning management system.
Meet deadlines for attendance certification and submission of final course grades.
Maintain regular office hours to assist students and improve student retention and success.
Attend and participate in college-wide, campus, department, or other activities and meetings.
Recognize and reflect standards of civility and collegiality in all interactions.
Comply with published college policies and procedures and meet professional standards for teaching in a community college.
