About The Position

This is the entry-level of maintenance and construction work on facilities such as bridges, buildings, bulkheads, highways, parking areas, piers, railroads, ramps, roads, taxiways, tunnels, or adjacent areas of the MDTA. Employees utilize tools, operate motorized equipment, and perform manual tasks essential to the upkeep and appearance of a facility. Employees work independently or as members of a crew. This is maintenance work requiring physical exertion, which is performed either outdoors under all weather conditions or inside an MDTA building. On some assignments, employees may be required to move objects weighing over 50 pounds and may also be required to work at high elevations or perform their job in cramped quarters in buildings or underground. Employees in this position receive guidance from a Facility Maintenance Technician IV or other designated official and general supervision from a Facility Maintenance Supervisor I or other designated official. This recruitment will be used to fill vacancies throughout the MDTA in Baltimore City, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Cecil, Harford, Charles, and Prince George's counties. This position will serve a 12-month probationary period. Employees in this class are considered “Essential Employees” and are subject to call-in 24 hours a day, as may be required in order to maintain continuous and safe operation of a facility. Employees may be required to work rotating shift work, to include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Additionally, the Facility Maintenance Technician I classification is part of a proficiency progression series. After all required benchmarks are met and certifications are passed, the employee may be advanced to the Facility Maintenance Technician II and Facility Maintenance Technician III classifications. This results in significant growth both monetarily and in the level of duties performed.

Requirements

  • Completion of the eighth grade
  • Possess a Class C motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland
  • Must list the license number and date of expiration on the application
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986

Nice To Haves

  • During the probationary period, the employee will be required to obtain and maintain a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) valid in the State of Maryland, depending on the type of equipment operated, that must be maintained for continued employment.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid US DOT Medical Card (or MVA-issued waiver) every two years.
  • Meet all Department of Budget and Management policies required for operation of State-owned vehicles to continue employment.
  • Satisfy the employing administration’s training and certification program requirements during the probationary period.
  • Satisfy the employing administration’s training and certification program requirements to be eligible for advancement to higher levels.
  • Satisfy that administration's training and certification program requirements if seeking transfer to another administration.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform maintenance on high structures and in cramped quarters in tunnels, underground and in buildings.
  • Be willing and available for duty at such hours, day or night, as may be required in order to maintain continuous and safe operation of a facility.
  • Employees are subject to being on call 24 hours a day and will be required to maintain a reliable communication link at their own expense for the purpose of emergency call back requirements.
  • Employees who work with or may be exposed to hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead-based paint or chromium may be required to undergo periodic medical testing, pass hazardous materials training and have the ability to wear a respirator.
  • Employees in these classifications are considered "Essential Employees" and may be required to sign and agree to all policies and procedures relating to "Essential Employee" status.
  • Candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
  • Employees in this classifications are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
