The Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA) is currently accepting applications for the position of Facility Maintenance Technician I within the Office of Facilities Maintenance and the Office of Grounds Maintenance within the Division of BWI Operations and Maintenance at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI Marshall Airport). This position is responsible for entry-level maintenance and construction work on facilities such as buildings, parking areas, ramps, roads, taxiways, or adjacent areas of MAA. Employees utilize tools, operate motorized equipment, and perform manual tasks essential to the upkeep and appearance of a facility. Employees work independently or as members of a crew. At the journey level, employees may work within a specialized trade. Employees do not supervise but may provide guidance, instruction, and assistance to other employees. This is maintenance work requiring physical exertion, which is performed either outdoors under all weather conditions or inside an MAA building. Some assignments, employees may be required to move objects weighing over 50 pounds and be required to work at high elevations or perform their job in cramped quarters in buildings or underground.

Requirements

  • Completion of the eighth grade.
  • None (experience).
  • Employees must possess a Class C motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • During the probationary period, the employee will be required to obtain and maintain a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in the State of Maryland, depending on the type of equipment operated, that must be maintained for continued employment.
  • This includes obtaining and maintaining a valid US DOT Medical Card (or MVA-issued waiver) every two years.
  • Applicants may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform maintenance on high structures and in cramped quarters in tunnels, underground and in buildings.
  • Employees must be willing and available for duty at such hours, day or night, as may be required in order to maintain continuous and safe operation of a facility.
  • Employees are subject to being on call 24 hours a day and will be required to maintain a reliable communication link at their own expense for the purpose of emergency call back requirements.
  • Employees who work with or may be exposed to hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead-based paint or chromium may be required to undergo periodic medical testing, pass hazardous materials training and have the ability to wear a respirator.
  • Candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
  • Employees in this classifications are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
  • All applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.

Nice To Haves

  • U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as defined under the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Performing preventive maintenance inspections and making repairs as needed.
  • Assisting Skills Tradesmen and Aviation High Voltage Electrical Technicians with various mild to complex projects.
  • Painting on runways and taxiways, grass cutting, asphalt and concreate repairing.
  • Operating snow removal heavy equipment to ensure safe operation of the airfield, to include the runways and taxiways during inclement weather.
