Facility Maintenance Engineer

Oceaneering•Houston, TX

About The Position

Oceaneering is seeking a Facility Maintenance Engineer to support NASA as an Oceaneering teammate on the JSC Engineering, Technology, and Science (JETS) II contract. The role is part of the Facility and Test Management section in the Operations and Test Department at NASA Johnson Space Center, supporting human spaceflight and deep space exploration programs. The engineer will help ensure that critical facilities and support systems remain operational and that services meet applicable standards. The position may be hired at any level in the professional career framework, depending on business needs. International travel may be required. Possible straight-time overtime and a 9/80 work schedule, with every other Friday off, are noted. The engineer will establish and execute reliability strategies, apply mechanical engineering principles to facility challenges, coordinate maintenance and pressure-system activities, maintain technical documentation, and support facility upgrades and space-simulation chambers. The role involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, management of maintenance schedules and project lifecycles, and progress reporting to senior engineering leadership. The position typically requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering and 2–5 years of relevant experience. U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency is required, as is the ability to complete a U.S. government background investigation.

Requirements

  • Typically, a bachelor's degree in Engineering and 2–5 years of experience in the field or a related area.
  • Related education in industrial facility maintenance experience.
  • Hands-on experience maintaining facility machinery, including pumps, motors, blowers, and valves.
  • Hands-on experience in a machine shop, tooling, and tool specification.
  • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to diagnose technical failures and implement corrective actions.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify and resolve complex technical issues and obstacles.
  • Familiarity with the principal operations of safety relief valves and how to specify them.
  • Highly organized and self-starting, with the ability to manage tasks and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Comfort working in challenging, fast-paced Thermal Vacuum Testing environments.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite, including the ability to interpret and revise Process and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Technical knowledge of vacuum blowers, mechanical pumps, and liquid nitrogen storage and piping.
  • Experience following schedules in Microsoft Project.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency.
  • Ability to complete a U.S. government background investigation.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong background in safety standards, including OSHA, NFPA, and ASME piping codes.
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling software such as Creo or Inventor.
  • Excellent communication skills for delivering presentations to stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated project-management experience.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and execute reliability strategies to ensure operational readiness of critical NASA/JSC CTSD support systems.
  • Apply mechanical engineering principles to design, test, and implement technical solutions for facility challenges, using AutoCAD to produce compliant drawings.
  • Coordinate with JSC Pressure Systems personnel on cooling towers, liquid nitrogen cryogenic tank farms, oil and chemical storage, vacuum pumps, and high-pressure systems, including preparing required Work Authorizing Documents (WADs).
  • Continue and enhance maintenance plans for cooling towers, liquid nitrogen bulk-storage cryogenic tanks, oil and chemical storage, vacuum mechanical pumps, and blowers.
  • Track system health and coordinate periodic maintenance and functional checks.
  • Develop technical specifications, Statements of Work, and cost estimates; track procurement, fabrication, and installation phases for facility upgrades and space-simulation chambers.
  • Manage maintenance schedules and project lifecycles with the team, and provide regular progress reports to senior engineering leadership.
  • Work independently, demonstrate leadership, and remain motivated and organized.
  • Perform other duties as required.
