About The Position

The Facilities & Transportation Maintenance Technician is responsible for supporting the daily operation, appearance, safety, and readiness of Cotton Funeral Service facilities, grounds, and company vehicles. This position performs groundskeeping, basic facility maintenance, vehicle care, transportation, deliveries and pickups, funeral home removals, and other operational support duties. The Technician is expected to take an active role in identifying facility or vehicle issues and reporting them to management before they interfere with funeral home operations. This is a hands-on position requiring dependability, professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Driving record acceptable under the company's automobile insurance requirements.
  • Ability to safely operate company vehicles.
  • Ability to perform physical and outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Strong reliability, punctuality, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and complete assigned responsibilities without continuous supervision.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with management, coworkers, vendors, families, and members of the public.
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle care and maintenance preferred.
  • Previous facilities, maintenance, groundskeeping, transportation, funeral service, or similar experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the exterior grounds of funeral home properties in a clean, safe, and professional condition.
  • Remove trash, debris, leaves, branches, and other materials from exterior areas.
  • Sweep and maintain sidewalks, entrances, driveways, parking lots, and other exterior areas.
  • Perform seasonal groundskeeping duties as assigned.
  • Remove snow and ice and apply salt or ice-melting products to sidewalks, entrances, and other designated areas when required.
  • Maintain outdoor trash receptacles and designated waste areas.
  • Inspect exterior areas for hazards, damage, lighting issues, or other conditions requiring attention.
  • Notify management of landscaping, structural, safety, or maintenance concerns requiring outside service.
  • Perform routine inspections of funeral home facilities and report maintenance concerns.
  • Complete minor repairs and maintenance tasks within the employee's training and ability.
  • Replace light bulbs and perform other basic building upkeep.
  • Assist with moving furniture, equipment, supplies, and other materials as needed.
  • Assist with setting up and breaking down rooms for funeral services, meetings, or special events when requested.
  • Monitor common areas for maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Immediately report plumbing leaks, electrical issues, HVAC problems, damaged equipment, or other significant facility concerns to management.
  • Coordinate access for approved maintenance vendors or contractors when directed by management.
  • Maintain maintenance tools, supplies, storage areas, and equipment in an organized and safe condition.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and professional appearance of company vehicles.
  • Wash and clean company vehicles according to the established schedule and as needed.
  • Clean vehicle interiors, windows, and other surfaces.
  • Ensure vehicles have adequate fuel and fill fuel tanks as required.
  • Conduct routine visual inspections of company vehicles.
  • Check and report concerns involving tires, tire pressure, exterior and interior lights, windshield wipers, visible fluid leaks, warning lights, vehicle damage, and general cleanliness and appearance.
  • Monitor vehicle mileage and maintenance schedules.
  • Notify management when vehicles are approaching scheduled oil changes, inspections, tire service, registration renewals, or other required maintenance.
  • Transport vehicles to and from approved repair shops, dealerships, inspection facilities, car washes, or other service providers as directed.
  • Maintain vehicle maintenance or mileage records as required.
  • Immediately report accidents, vehicle damage, warning lights, mechanical problems, or unsafe operating conditions.
  • Ensure company vehicles are returned to their designated locations and properly secured after use.
  • Transport supplies, documents, equipment, flowers, memorial items, and other materials between funeral home locations and approved destinations.
  • Pick up supplies, equipment, parts, and other business-related items as directed.
  • Make deliveries to funeral home locations, cemeteries, churches, vendors, families, or other authorized locations as assigned.
  • Transport company vehicles between locations when necessary.
  • Obtain receipts, signatures, or other documentation for deliveries and purchases when required.
  • Communicate delays or problems with assigned pickups or deliveries to management promptly.
  • Safeguard company property and materials while in transit.
  • Assist with or perform removals and transportation of deceased individuals in accordance with company procedures, applicable law, and management direction.
  • Respond professionally and respectfully when interacting with families, hospitals, nursing facilities, hospice facilities, medical examiner offices, and other institutions.
  • Assist with safely transferring deceased individuals using approved equipment and procedures.
  • Maintain the dignity and respectful treatment of deceased individuals at all times.
  • Ensure removal vehicles and equipment are clean, properly stocked, and ready for use.
  • Follow company identification, documentation, and chain-of-custody procedures.
  • Immediately report any unusual circumstances, incidents, injuries, or concerns occurring during a removal.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding deceased individuals and their families.
  • Assist funeral directors, management, and other departments with reasonable operational needs.
  • Transport equipment, chairs, supplies, caskets, flowers, or other materials when properly trained and directed.
  • Assist with preparing facilities before services or special events.
  • Respond to urgent facility or transportation needs when assigned.
  • Help maintain storage rooms, garages, utility areas, and workspaces in an organized condition.
  • Receive deliveries and ensure items are placed in the appropriate location.
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on funeral home and operational needs.
  • Follow all company safety procedures.
  • Operate company vehicles safely and in accordance with applicable traffic laws.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment when required.
  • Use proper lifting and transfer techniques.
  • Immediately report workplace injuries, vehicle accidents, property damage, unsafe conditions, or equipment failures.
  • Do not perform electrical, plumbing, mechanical, structural, or other specialized repairs beyond the employee's training or authorization.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
