About The Position

The Facilities Technician is responsible for second shift operations of all existing facilities on the Claremont McKenna College campus including preventive, corrective, and building maintenance; housekeeping tasks within residential and academic buildings; and grounds upkeep. This position responds to questions and requests, and addresses unexpected after-hours campus issues. This position interacts with students, Facilities and Campus Services staff, Campus Safety officers, and Dean of Students on-call personnel. This position provides an after-hours presence on campus and reports illegal or disruptive activity to Campus Safety.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to high school diploma or GED that provides the required knowledge, skills and ability.
  • A minimum of three years of grounds keeping or maintenance experience with increasing responsibility.
  • A valid driver’s license is required to drive college-owned vehicles and the ability to be insured under the College’s authorized driver’s policy.
  • Must be forklift trained and certified.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, climb, push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds from the ground to the waist without assistance and climb ladders up to 6 feet unassisted.
  • Must be able to work on feet for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must take and successfully pass a functional capacity test after job offer and prior to hire.
  • Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.
  • Must know safe working methods and procedures.
  • Must have knowledge of cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to walk or drive safely around campus during night time and in low light levels.
  • Ability to operate the College’s vehicles safely for campus-related work and meet all insurance-related requirements.
  • Ability to communicate and provide direction to others in a clear and professional manner.

  • Must wear a uniform and safety equipment as required.

  • Ability to change out light bulbs in a variety of fixtures.
  • Basic plumbing knowledge.
  • Knowledge of working with powered blowers, lawn mowers, edgers, hedge trimmers, and other powered equipment.
  • Ability to take and follow directions.
  • Ability to receive and respond appropriately to constructive criticism.
  • Must maintain a professional demeanor.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Ability to understand and follow basic instructions in English, both orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, clean up, and pick up for scheduled events.
  • Participate in cleaning fields for games and weekend events.
  • Attend events set-up meetings as assigned.
  • Respond to work orders in a timely manner, and closely work and coordinate with vendors for joint work orders.
  • Assist CMC maintenance personnel with preventative measures on campus.
  • Perform minor maintenance repairs including plumbing, small leaks, and shutting off valves, if needed.
  • Provide an after-hours presence on campus and report illegal or disruptive activity to Campus Safety.
  • May respond to emergency situations.
  • Evaluate and respond to incidents and issues with the Dean of Students Office and Campus Safety.
  • May enforce campus policies.
  • Review and adjust sprinkler coverage throughout watering cycles.
  • Perform housekeeping duties as needed including cleaning bathrooms or dorm rooms, cleaning up spills and glass, spraying for ants, and other housekeeping duties inside and outside of buildings.
  • Remove and dispose of trash from exterior trash cans.
  • Evaluate and reset circuit breakers.
  • Troubleshoot basic HVAC complaints and address requests.
  • Clean debris from tree lighting and review for proper function.
  • Clean and wipe trash receptacles, glass rails, campus signage, and pipe handrails.
  • Keep records of night shift incidents.
  • Assist with access to various doors on campus for students and vendors.
  • May solicit input from administrators in the major buildings and departments to identify issues or concerns.
  • May utilize powered blowers, lawn mowers, edgers, hedge trimmers, and other powered equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, ADA, fire codes, and campus safety standards.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.
