About The Position

The City of Petaluma is seeking a dedicated, facility maintenance professional to fill a current vacancy at the Facilities Technician II or Senior Facilities Technician level, depending on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate. These positions typically work a 4/10 schedule; however, schedules can vary based upon staffing needs. Incumbents in these positions may be required to work on-call, overtime, and/or holidays, as needed. This recruitment may also be used to fill additional vacancies that may occur within the next twelve months.

Requirements

Equivalent to graduation from high school.
Two years of experience in HVAC, carpentry, electrical, or plumbing and the ability to troubleshoot various building maintenance problems at a level equivalent to the Facilities Technician I class (for Facilities Technician II).
Five years of increasingly responsible experience performing maintenance, construction, and repair duties (for Senior Facilities Technician).
Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license.
Knowledge of standard methods, materials, and equipment used in one or more of the building trades.
Knowledge of applicable building codes and ordinances.
Knowledge of safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
Knowledge of basic mathematics used in the course of the position.
Knowledge of office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
Knowledge of typical operations, services, and activities within city facilities (for Senior Facilities Technician).
Knowledge of principles, methods, materials, and tools employed in the repair and maintenance of pumps, motors, HVAC, electrical, and facility mechanical equipment and structures (for Senior Facilities Technician).
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in maintenance work (for Senior Facilities Technician).
Knowledge of basic plumbing and electrical principles (for Senior Facilities Technician).
Knowledge of practices and techniques of metal cutting and welding (for Senior Facilities Technician).
Knowledge of principles and practices of employee supervision, leadership, and training (for Senior Facilities Technician).
Knowledge of report writing and records maintenance (for Senior Facilities Technician).
Knowledge of standard principles and practices of purchasing and inventory control (for Senior Facilities Technician).
Knowledge of methods and techniques of developing and implementing a preventive and predictive maintenance program (for Senior Facilities Technician).

Nice To Haves

Advanced training in public facilities maintenance and operations, construction technology, skilled crafts, or other specialty specifically relevant to the area of assignment is highly desirable (for Facilities Technician II).
A California Contractors License C10, C20 or the IBEW Apprenticeship Certificate and EPA Universal Refrigerant Recovery certification is highly desirable (for Facilities Technician II).
Additional technical or college-level course work is highly desirable (for Senior Facilities Technician).
Possession of an EPA Universal Refrigerant recovery license (for Senior Facilities Technician).
Possession of a California Contractor’s C-10 Electrical License or equivalent union or state document is desirable (for Senior Facilities Technician).
Possession of a California Contractor’s C-20 HVAC license or equivalent union or state document is desirable (for Senior Facilities Technician).
Possession of a California Contractor’s “B” General Contractor’s License is desirable (for Senior Facilities Technician).

Responsibilities

Perform a variety of highly skilled technical work in the building trades’ in the repair, maintenance, and alteration of City buildings and facilities.
Lead and perform a variety of skilled and semiskilled tasks at a journeyman or higher skill level pertaining to the installation, maintenance, repair, and service of the electrical and mechanical equipment, facility infrastructure, structures, and roofs; and provide technical support to City project and program managers.
Provide technical expertise and troubleshooting regarding the most complex maintenance and repair issues.
Lead work and training of staff in lower classifications.
