About The Position

Reporting to the Facilities Technician, the Facilities Summer Student will support the day-to-day maintenance and operations of our hospital environment. This role is ideal for someone interested in facilities management, building operations, or hands-on trades work. No prior healthcare or facilities experience is required—on-the-job training will be provided. You will assist with routine repairs, preventive maintenance, equipment checks, and general upkeep to help maintain a safe, functional, and clean environment for clients, staff, and visitors. This position offers a practical introduction to the inner workings of a small hospital, including exposure to building systems, safety practices, and vendor coordination. This is an on-site position, with all hours of work occurring at Casey House.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, a degree, diploma, apprenticeship, or trades-related program (e.g., building systems, construction, engineering technology, facilities management, general maintenance, or a related field); an equivalent combination of education and interest in trades will also be considered.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent customer service mindset, with the ability to communicate respectfully and clearly with staff and others.
  • Strong communication skills, including comfort using email and basic messaging tools.
  • Computer competency, including familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), climb ladders, and stand or walk for extended periods.
  • Able to work flexible hours as needed to support occasional events or maintenance tasks.
  • A commitment to safety, professionalism, and contributing to an inclusive, respectful workplace.
  • Eligible per the requirements of the Canada Summer Jobs program.
  • Between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period.
  • A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience and/or training in trades (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, etc.) or general maintenance is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in general building maintenance, including minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and HVAC-related tasks under supervision.
  • Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on equipment and facilities as directed.
  • Respond to maintenance requests and assist in addressing issues such as leaks, minor repairs, and general wear and tear.
  • Participate in day-to-day operations of the facilities team and contribute ideas to improve processes where appropriate.
  • Assist with setup and breakdown for hospital events, office moves, or small renovation projects.
  • Support groundskeeping and basic custodial tasks, as required, to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Monitor and help maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety in mechanical rooms, storage areas, and work sites.
  • Follow hospital safety protocols, including infection prevention and control, and hazardous material handling procedures.
  • Use tools and equipment safely and report any concerns or hazards promptly.
  • Assist with coordinating and supporting vendors and contractors working on-site.
  • Help document work orders, repairs, and maintenance activities.
  • Communicate professionally with staff and, when appropriate, with clients and visitors when responding to facilities-related concerns.
  • Use email, messaging, and basic computer tools to support maintenance tracking and communication.
