About The Position

Roth IAMS is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative Space Planner to support our Facilities Master Planner and broader project delivery team. This role is central to the firm’s ability to deliver high-quality, evidence-based space planning solutions across a diverse portfolio of clients, including government agencies, municipalities, K-12 schools (public and private), colleges and universities, and medical and healthcare facilities. The Space Planner will work directly under the supervision of the Facilities Master Planner, assisting with the analysis, design, documentation, and project management of space planning engagements from inception through delivery. The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience with space utilization studies, CAD/CAFM tools, stakeholder engagement, and the preparation of professional planning reports and presentations.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Interior Design, Urban Planning, Facilities Management, Environmental Design, or a related discipline
Minimum 3–5 years of progressive experience in space planning, facilities planning, or interior design in a professional or institutional setting
Demonstrated experience working with at least two of the following sectors: government/municipal, K-12 education, post-secondary education, or healthcare/medical facilities
Experience supporting or contributing to master planning studies, feasibility assessments, or capital planning processes
Proficiency in AutoCAD required
Experience with CAFM/IWMS platforms (e.g., Archibus, Planon, FM:Systems, iOFFICE, or equivalent)
Working knowledge of space utilization analysis and reporting tools
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Competency with graphic presentation software (e.g., Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Bluebeam, or Canva)
Solid understanding of building codes, zoning regulations, and accessibility requirements (ADA, AODA, NBC)
Knowledge of space planning standards applicable to K-12, post-secondary, government/GSA, and healthcare environments
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to synthesize complex data into clear planning recommendations
Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills; ability to produce client-ready reports and presentations
Ability to travel for up to one week at a time as project requirements dictate
Highly organized with strong time management skills; capable of managing multiple concurrent projects under deadline pressure
Collaborative team player; comfortable working with architects, engineers, planners, client stakeholders, and elected officials
Proactive, self-directed, and responsive; able to operate effectively in both office and field environments
A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable, insured vehicle are required (work-related mileage reimbursed)

Nice To Haves

Master’s degree in a relevant field is an asset
Experience with Revit and/or BIM workflows strongly preferred
Experience with Microsoft Project or equivalent scheduling tools
Familiarity with ArcView GIS software and tools for site and campus planning is an asset
Awareness of LEED certification criteria and sustainable design principles
Familiarity with public sector and institutional procurement frameworks (RFPs, RFQs, contract management)
Exposure to public sector procurement processes and client management protocols is an asset

Responsibilities

Conduct space utilization surveys, walkthroughs, and occupancy studies across government, K-12, post-secondary, and healthcare facilities
Analyze current and projected space needs; develop and present options and feasibility assessments to internal teams and clients
Prepare block plans, stack plans, adjacency diagrams, and detailed floor plan layouts using AutoCAD, Revit, or equivalent CAD software
Maintain and update CAFM/IWMS databases with accurate space inventory, room classifications, and occupancy data
Produce concise, evidence-based planning reports, utilization analyses, and graphic presentations following Roth IAMS report formats and brand standards
Ensure all deliverables comply with local, provincial/state, and federal regulations, building codes, accessibility standards (ADA/AODA), and applicable sector guidelines
Maintain accurate records and project files; contribute to the firm’s capital asset database management activities
Support quality assurance reviews of drawings, specifications, and written deliverables prior to client submission
Benchmark space utilization against sector-specific standards (e.g., GSA, provincial school facility guidelines, post-secondary space norms, healthcare planning guidelines)
Identify opportunities for space consolidation, repurpose, or reconfiguration to support client operational objectives
Assist the Facilities Master Planner in all phases of facilities master planning studies, from scoping through final report delivery
Prepare and review scopes of work, cost estimates, schedules, and deliverable frameworks for space planning projects
Support feasibility studies, business cases, and program of requirements (POR) documents for capital projects
Coordinate with architects, engineers, project managers, and client representatives to ensure plans reflect user needs and comply with applicable codes and regulations
Track project plans, timelines, task details, and status updates; flag issues proactively to the Master Planner
Compile field notes and photographic documentation from site visits into structured reports
Serve as a responsive point of contact for clients in government, municipal, K-12, higher education, and healthcare sectors on space-planning deliverables
Facilitate stakeholder workshops, focus groups, and departmental interviews to capture space requirements and operational workflows
Present planning options and recommendations clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, including elected officials, senior administrators, facilities managers, and clinical teams
Assist clients in developing space management policies, standards, and long-range facility plans aligned with their strategic objectives
