About The Position

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking a motivated and experienced facilities professional to support the agency’s mission of keeping people and businesses moving by leading the maintenance, repair, and operational readiness of critical North Central Region (NCR) facilities and infrastructure. This position plays a vital leadership role by supervising, scheduling, and directing trade crews responsible for maintaining and improving a wide variety of state facilities, including regional headquarters, maintenance area offices, salt sheds, radio sites, and safety rest areas. The successful candidate will oversee corrective, preventive, and emergency maintenance activities while coordinating with staff, contractors, vendors, and partner agencies to ensure facilities remain safe, functional, and operational.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates proven journey-level trade knowledge and experience in one or more skilled trades such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, or related maintenance disciplines, including performing operations, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and facility improvement activities in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of facility operations, maintenance practices, construction principles, and project management techniques, including planning, coordinating, scheduling, monitoring, and supporting maintenance and construction projects to ensure timely and effective completion.
  • Demonstrates the ability to read, interpret, and apply plans, blueprints, drawings, specifications, and technical documents to ensure work is completed in compliance with established standards, project requirements, and applicable codes and regulations.
  • Demonstrates proficiency using computers, Microsoft Office applications (including Excel and Outlook), computerized maintenance management systems, and other technology tools to support maintenance tracking, reporting, scheduling, communication, and operational activities.
  • Demonstrates the ability to interpret and apply applicable building codes, regulations, laws, statutes, environmental requirements, and workplace safety standards to support compliant facility operations, maintenance, and construction activities.
  • Demonstrates the ability to obtain and maintain required certifications, including Asbestos Class III Worker certification within six months of employment and Certified Asbestos Supervisor certification within one year of employment, in accordance with position requirements and safety regulations.
  • Demonstrates the ability to lead, supervise, plan, schedule, coordinate, and evaluate the work of journey-level trades personnel and maintenance staff while promoting accountability, teamwork, productivity, and safe work practices.
  • Demonstrates the ability to provide coaching, mentoring, feedback, and corrective action, when necessary, in accordance with personnel policies, labor agreements, and organizational expectations to support employee development and team performance.
  • Demonstrates experience serving in a lead or supervisory capacity, including directing work activities, assigning tasks, monitoring performance, resolving issues, and supporting daily operations in a maintenance, facilities, or construction environment.
  • Demonstrates the ability to safely perform and oversee physically demanding work activities, including lifting and transporting materials weighing up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation, while ensuring compliance with department, state, and federal safety regulations and safe operating practices.
  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain a valid driver’s license and safely operate vehicles in support of inspections, project coordination, maintenance activities, and emergency response needs.
  • Demonstrates the ability to consider new information, adapt to changing priorities or operational needs, incorporate diverse perspectives, and develop effective solutions that support organizational goals and continuous improvement efforts.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrates possession of, or the ability to obtain and apply, Building Operator Certification Level 1 or Level 2 knowledge related to facility systems, building operations, energy efficiency, preventative maintenance, and operational best practices.
  • Demonstrates lead or supervisory experience within a government or public-sector environment, including coordinating staff, supporting operational priorities, navigating public agency policies and procedures, and working collaboratively within a regulated organizational structure.
  • Demonstrates experience using AutoCAD, access control systems software, HVAC control software, and related building systems technology to support facility operations, maintenance planning, troubleshooting, security, and construction or renovation activities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all phases of planning the development, acquisition, modification, maintenance, and expansion of structures and related facilities for maximum utilization by State government (NCR Facilities include Region office Headquarters, Area maintenance, salt sheds, Radio Sites and occasionally Safety Rest Areas).
  • Plan, organize, schedule and direct crew members, vendors for daily corrective, preventive, and emergent maintenance work.
  • Communicate with key administrative staff and personnel regarding work that requires special scheduling challenges (utility shut-downs, inspections, contracted work, or other work).
  • Initiate and track activities with the use of a computerized maintenance management system.
  • Guide and instruct direct reports to maximize tracking efforts.
  • Compiles and analyzes comprehensive research to forecast future facility needs and establishes a project budget for capital expansion or modification.
  • Assist in completion of facility and site condition assessments.
  • Prepares Architectural drawings using AutoCAD computer software program.
  • Ensure purchasing guidelines are followed in any purchases by supervised work groups for parts and supplies.
  • Provides construction management and inspection for Region and HQ Projects.
  • Facilitates the installation, repairs and maintains the hardware and software of all facility access control systems regionwide, both electronic and non-electronic.
