About The Position

Under general direction, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in maintaining, constructing, and caring for parks and park facilities. Work varies and requires interpretive judgment within prescribed standards and procedures. The position performs manual labor and equipment operation for maintenance, repair, and minor construction of ball fields, recreation facilities, parks, and buildings; maintains grounds and landscaping; prepares facilities for activities and special events; and assists with irrigation work. The role may also perform overtime and other assigned duties.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
Experience in ground maintenance, nursery, or landscape work.
Valid Nebraska driver’s license.
Ability to obtain an EPA pesticide applicator’s license within 12 months of hire.
Ability to read and comprehend written material, listen to and apply information and instructions, and understand basic arithmetic.
Ability to organize information for concise written records.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to safely operate and maintain equipment.
Ability to perform heavy physical work: exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly.
Ability to climb inclines and ladders, balance on uneven surfaces, walk extensively, bend and stoop frequently, and reach frequently overhead and horizontally.
Adequate vision and color vision to perform essential functions; ability to frequently perceive sounds by ear and express ideas orally as needed.
Frequent coordination and manual dexterity to operate vehicles, equipment, and tools.

Responsibilities

Operate trucks and light equipment and perform manual labor in the maintenance, repair, and minor construction of ball fields, recreation facilities, parks, and buildings.
Assign, schedule, and supervise seasonal staff; assist with supervision of seasonal workers in field work as assigned.
Maintain material and equipment inventory.
Service and maintain equipment used for turf and park grounds maintenance.
Oversee watering, seeding, and maintenance of landscaping, including flowers and plantings.
Maintain turf using herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers; trim trees and shrubs; irrigate, water, mow, edge, and aerate turf.
Coordinate with recreational staff and facility user groups to prepare parks before and during special events.
Prepare and maintain tennis courts, ball fields, soccer fields, splash pads, basketball courts, volleyball courts, and swimming pools.
Perform extensive winter snow and ice removal.
Maintain effective working relationships with facility users, fellow employees, officials, and the public.
Maintain playground equipment and park facilities, including minor building maintenance and remodeling.
Assist the irrigation specialist with irrigation installation, repair, maintenance, plumbing, and related tasks.
Maintain and safely operate equipment and apply current methods, equipment, materials, and tools to care for grounds and perform maintenance and construction tasks.
Perform overtime as required and other duties as assigned.
