Parks Maintenance Worker
About The Position
This position performs minor maintenance, minor construction, custodial duties, and groundskeeping in and around City parks, grounds, and recreational facilities. Duties include maintaining lawns and landscaped areas, cleaning facilities, assisting with swimming pool maintenance, performing basic carpentry and minor electrical repairs, maintaining irrigation systems, supporting street maintenance, painting City property, and preparing cemetery lots for funerals. Essential functions may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations. Other related duties may be assigned.
Requirements
- Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with high school completion or equivalent.
- Usually one year of experience related to groundskeeping or other general labor services, or sufficient experience to understand basic principles relevant to the major duties.
- Valid Texas driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Possession of, or ability to readily obtain, a state-certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Knowledge of building and grounds maintenance methods and practices.
- Knowledge of departmental and safety rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of basic carpentry, mechanical repair, and electrical procedures.
- Knowledge of various cleaning chemicals.
- Skill in operating specialized cleaning equipment, such as buffers, carpet shampoo machines, vacuum cleaners, and swimming pool cleaning equipment, as well as various hand tools.
- Skill in operating power tools such as riding and push lawn mowers, weed eaters, blowers, and chain saws.
- Skill in operating hand tools such as shovels, picks, rakes, and tree trimmers.
- Skill in pesticide application.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
Responsibilities
- Operate tractors and push mowers to mow grass at City parks and sports facilities; may operate a front-end loader.
- Trim trees and weeds, edge grounds, rake and clean areas, and pick up trash, paper, and tree trimmings.
- Apply herbicides and pesticides.
- Perform basic carpentry work and repairs.
- Clean restrooms, restock soap and paper products, pick up trash, wash windows, and empty trash cans at City parks and facilities.
- Assist with swimming pool maintenance by monitoring chemical levels, adding chemicals as needed, cleaning and vacuuming, and disassembling, cleaning, and repairing chemical pumps and injector systems.
- Perform minor electrical repairs.
- Maintain and replace sprinkler heads and sprinkler lines.
- Clean catch basins, spread sand and gravel, perform asphalt patch work, and serve as a flagman assisting with street maintenance.
- Maintain City streets and property by painting buildings, crosswalks, center lines, signs, curbs, and equipment.
- Prepare cemetery lots for funerals by digging graves and setting up burial equipment.
- Fertilize lawns, greens, and fairways.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
