About The Position

The City of Portage is looking for a mechanically inclined, independent, self-motivated Facilities Maintenance Technician to join our Public Works Department. This role involves monitoring and maintaining the heating and ventilation equipment, electrical, mechanical, and structural conditions of city buildings, including custodial work and immediate grounds. The technician will also inspect building service vendors, ensure quality service, and resolve any issues that arise. A key aspect of the role is maintaining a safe, inviting, and clean atmosphere for all public areas within the city buildings. Responsibilities include performing minor repairs, monitoring grounds, developing preventive maintenance procedures, and managing purchase order requests.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • One to three years maintenance or other related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid State of Michigan Driver’s License.
  • Mechanical ability and understanding of basic building systems.
  • Proficient with various computer programs and current electronic devices.
  • Ability to familiarize self with department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to pass a drug/alcohol screening, background and driver’s license check.

Nice To Haves

  • Operate a variety of equipment including power saws, power sanders, drills, paint sprayers, plumbing snakes and rodders, routers and grinders.
  • Determine quantity and types of supplies, materials, tools and equipment needed for maintenance programs and projects; arrange for purchase and procurement of same.
  • Assure that maintenance equipment and tools are kept in good working order.
  • Read and interpret sketches, diagrams, drawings, and blueprints.
  • Maintain time, material and equipment use records.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and maintain heating and ventilation equipment, electrical, mechanical, and structural conditions of city buildings.
  • Perform custodial work and maintain immediate grounds.
  • Inspect building service vendors to ensure contract compliance and quality service.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and coordinating repair efforts with contractors.
  • Maintain a safe, inviting, and clean atmosphere for buildings, internally and externally.
  • Perform painting, carpentry restoration, minor electrical and plumbing repairs.
  • Monitor roof drainage systems and take corrective measures.
  • Monitor City Hall, landscaping, irrigation, and grounds maintenance.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance procedures and maintain maintenance records.
  • Generate purchase order requests and work with vendors to obtain quotes.
  • Shovel sidewalks and spread ice-control material as necessary.
  • Inspect city facilities grounds for litter and debris and remove as required.
  • Perform regular inspections on the emergency stand-by generator and monthly fire extinguisher checks.
  • Comply with all safety procedures and requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with City, County, and State ordinances/codes.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair the City’s lock system.
  • Perform work in emergencies, including work scheduled after regular hours and/or on call.
