About The Position

The City of Portland is recruiting to fill current and future Facilities Maintenance Technician vacancies in Fleet & Facilities. Applicants must possess one of the following licenses issued by State of Oregon: Limited Maintenance Electrician (LME), Plant Journeyman (PJ), Journeyman (J), Plant Supervising Electrician (PS), General Supervising Electrician (S). This recruitment includes a work skills demonstration. Work skills demonstrations are designed to assess your ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Job Appointment: Full-time, Regular. Work Schedule: 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with occasional on-call work and opportunities for overtime. Total Compensation Ranges for Facilities Maintenance Technician (DCTU): Entry 6 Months 1 Year Base Wages $93,288 $100,734 $103,813 OPSRP and IAP Contributions $27,763 $29,979 $30,895 City-Paid Health and Wellness Benefits $28,020 $28,020 $28,020 Other Required Contributions $13,993 $15,110 $15,572 Total Annual Compensation $163,064 $173,843 $178,299 Includes employer-paid portion of Medical, Dental, Vision, Employee Assistance Program (EAP), Basic Life, Carrot Fertility, Long Term Disability, and TRIP Program Includes employer-paid portion of Medicare, Social Security, TriMet tax, and Paid Leave Oregon Position Summary: The Facilities Maintenance Technician performs preventative maintenance and repairs on heating, ventilation, and cooling systems; lighting, plumbing, and other core building systems; and a variety of commercial building equipment. This role requires expertise across multiple building systems to identify and resolve operating conditions that could lead to equipment failure or inefficient performance. Responsibilities include performing skilled building maintenance tasks requiring strong mechanical aptitude, as well as accurately entering and retrieving data using computerized maintenance management systems and other applications. The ideal candidate demonstrates a strong commitment to workplace safety and compliance with OSHA standards. The eligibility list established through this recruitment may be used to fill current and future vacancies citywide, including assignments that involve maintaining household appliances and office furnishings; therefore, basic knowledge of appliance repair—such as washers, dryers, dishwashers, ovens, cooktops, and refrigerators—is desired.

Requirements

  • Oregon Limited Maintenance Electrical (LME) License or higher at time of application. We will accept any of the following licenses issued by the State of Oregon: Limited Maintenance Electrician (LME), Plant Journeyman (PJ), Journeyman (J), Plant Supervising Electrician (PS), General Supervising Electrician (S).
  • Experience diagnosing and responding to emergency maintenance issues, including providing technical guidance and recommendations and performing skilled electrical and HVAC repairs.
  • Ability to perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of plumbing, electrical, mechanical, HVAC, refrigeration, and related building systems and equipment in a commercial, industrial, or institutional setting.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, construction plans, and technical manuals; estimate project costs; coordinate and monitor contractor or vendor work; and ensure compliance with facility maintenance standards and specifications.
  • Ability to work effectively with coworkers, contractors, and the public in a diverse work environment.
  • A valid state driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to pass an in-depth background investigation.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical examination and physical capacities test after an offer of employment has been accepted.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. as job duties require.
  • Ability to obtain CFC Handler and Refrigerant Recovery Certification within six (6) months of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic knowledge of appliance repair—such as washers, dryers, dishwashers, ovens, cooktops, and refrigerators.
  • Certificate of HVAC Completion from a 2-year Trade School or Apprenticeship ORACCA Brazing Certification or equivalent
  • State of Oregon Backflow Tester/Cross Connection Inspector
  • State of Oregon’s Class 3 Boiler License

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance to plumbing, electrical, mechanical systems, and related system components; test systems’ competency and devices and evaluate performance; participate in developing preventative maintenance plans.
  • Repair and replace plumbing, electrical, mechanical systems, and system components, including sensors and related hardware and software.
  • Maintain induction and air handling units; clean and inspect all equipment; maintain and service refrigeration units.
  • Assist in the review of new construction or remodel plans to ensure compliance with facility maintenance standards and specifications.
  • Repair and maintain facilities structures; perform minor repairs to building plumbing, low-voltage, and line voltage (up to 600V, phase to phase) electric systems, door hardware, fire, life, safety protection equipment/systems, sprinkler systems, and irrigation lines; construct and maintain indoor/outdoor recreational facilities, fans, lights and related; conduct structural inspections for safety.
  • Repair and maintain small, motorized equipment and engines.
  • Respond to emergency calls; assess and determine the need for additional assistance; provide technical support and recommendations.
