About The Position

This posting is for a July 6, 2026 start date. Performs entry to intermediate skilled trades level work maintaining Town buildings, grounds, and park facilities, and related work as apparent or assigned. This position is designated as essential during emergency or disaster situations. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education and minimal experience in custodial or facility maintenance work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
  • Moderate (1-3 years) experience in facility maintenance.
  • FEMA / IC 100 and 700 certifications within 6 months of appointment.
  • OSHA 10 certification within 1 year of hire.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification within 1 year of hire.
  • Knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools.
  • Basic knowledge of automotive repair.
  • Skill in the use of equipment to which assigned.
  • Basic knowledge of HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems.
  • Ability to perform labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to perform work during emergency or disaster situations upon request and as assigned by management.
  • Ability to complete and maintain work orders on work performed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a wide variety of building maintenance and repair tasks involving one or more of the maintenance trades, such as carpentry, plumbing, masonry, painting, welding and electrical work.
  • Performs general carpentry work in the construction, repair or alteration of floors, walls, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, screens and various other wooden articles; builds cabinets; hangs and finishes drywall.
  • Sands, paints, or stains walls, woodwork, cabinets, tables and other wooden articles.
  • Assists with the installation of water and sanitary fixtures and equipment; repairs leaks; installs replacement fixtures; changes water filters.
  • Maintains heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems; changes filters; installs duct work, and chassis parts.
  • Maintains and repairs equipment such as door hinges, locks, latches, and closures; builds and repairs bookshelves, desks, and cabinets.
  • Completes work orders and inspection reports.
  • Identifies and reports hazardous conditions and facility maintenance needs to supervisor.
  • Operates equipment and hand tools in performance of work.
  • Performs general cleaning and waste removal.
  • Assists with snow removal and ice control.
  • Assists grounds maintenance and streets staff as needed or requested.
  • Assists with preventative maintenance on equipment and machinery.
  • Performs work during emergency or disaster situations upon request and as assigned by management.
  • Assists with the installation of water and sanitary fixtures and equipment; analyzes defects or malfunctions in plumbing systems; repairs leaks; installs replacement fixtures.
  • Installs and inspects the operation of mechanical systems such as motors, pumps, HVAC units.
  • Enforces proper safety protocols to ensure crew safety.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on equipment and machinery.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
