About The Position

Are you someone who takes pride in creating beautiful, safe, and welcoming public spaces? The City is looking for a skilled Facilities Maintenance Specialist to help maintain the buildings, grounds, landscapes, and unique public amenities that our community enjoys every day. In this hands-on role, you'll perform a wide range of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work, including maintaining landscaped grounds, installing and repairing irrigation systems, enhancing public spaces, and supporting the operation of the City's interactive and recirculating water features. Your work will have a direct impact on the appearance, safety, and functionality of City facilities. Reporting to the Facilities Supervisor, you'll work both independently and as part of a collaborative team. You'll also have opportunities to provide day-to-day guidance and direction to seasonal and temporary employees within the Facilities Division. This is a journey-level position responsible for maintaining City facilities, infrastructure, and related systems in a safe, reliable, and efficient condition. Responsibilities include inspecting, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing assigned facilities and equipment while ensuring City assets remain attractive, functional, and ready to serve the public. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Fours years of experience or vocational training in landscape construction and maintenance, construction or maintenance related to grounds maintenance; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Oregon Commercial Drivers License, Class B
  • Flagging Certificate
  • Cave-in Protection/Competent Person/Confined Space
  • CPR/First Aid and AED Certification
  • Public Pesticide Applicators License - Ornamental and Turf Herbicide
  • Certified Pool Operator Certificate or Aquatic Facility Operator Certification.
  • Must possess these certifications/licenses at time of hire or have the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Ability to perform modifications, maintenance, and repairs, including related construction, to City facilities, grounds, and landscapes.
  • Knowledge of maintenance principles, practices, tools, and materials for maintaining and repairing building grounds, including landscape construction, street tree maintenance, irrigation, and other related facilities and properties.
  • Knowledge of the operation and minor maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles, and power equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic control procedures and traffic sign regulations.
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of safety equipment and practices related to the work, including the handling of hazardous chemicals.
  • Knowledge of safe driving rules and practices.
  • Knowledge of record keeping principles and procedures.
  • Knowledge of computer software related to position.
  • Knowledge of techniques for providing a high level of customer service to public and City staff, in person, electronically (i.e., email or text), and over the telephone.
  • Ability to operate specialized maintenance and repair equipment related to the area of assignment.
  • Ability to set up and operate traffic area construction zones, including cones, barricades, and flagging.
  • Ability to troubleshoot maintenance problems and determine materials and supplies.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of technical landscape construction duties, including planting flowers, shrubs, and trees, pruning and repairing damaged trees, making and repairing tree wells, irrigating, mowing, and fertilizing turf, trimming and planting, fertilizing, and pruning shrubs.
  • Performs pesticide applications as required, including calculating proper amounts of pesticides, spraying landscapes and trees, and completing necessary paperwork.
  • Operates specialized vehicles and heavy equipment related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of City landscapes, trees, and related facilities.
  • Maintains landscapes in a clean and safe condition, including picking up trash and maintaining trash receptacles, and cleaning restrooms.
  • Maintains building grounds appearance, including mowing, trimming, edging, fertilizing, watering turf and other landscaped areas, and removing graffiti.
  • Installs and repairs irrigation equipment, including installing irrigation pipes, testing systems and system programming, and making repairs.
  • Responds to and records completed daily tasks in the City's asset management system.
  • Ice and snow mitigation during inclement weather.
  • Conducts minor facility maintenance repairs.
  • Performs set up and take down of meeting rooms.
  • Provides special event support, including set up, take down, and clean up.
  • Assist with the effective operation, maintenance and repair of the City's water feature systems.
  • Operate equipment necessary to install and maintain the facilities and grounds.
  • Perform routine inspection and maintenance necessary for the efficient and safe operation of the equipment (safety inspection, grease and oil, hydraulic systems, etc.).
  • Report problems and coordinate the repair of equipment with the Fleet Services Division personnel.
  • Communicate with other department employees to effectively and efficiently coordinate work program
  • Communicate with employees from other departments and agencies in order to coordinate and implement the work program
  • Communicate with members of the general public in order to coordinate work programs and provide appropriate information about the city activities
  • Respond to questions from the public about City programs, facilities, and schedules
  • Provide direction to the public concerning safety issues related to the use of City facilities
  • Provide assistance in user conflict situations
  • Acknowledge customers when they enter a city facility by greeting them with a smile and positive tone of voice whether in person, on the phone or in email.
  • Gather necessary information to assist the customer.
  • Where possible, handle issues/questions/requests without transferring customer to someone else.
  • Seek out answers to questions first; if unsuccessful provide name/contact information of someone who can assist.
