About The Position

Under the general supervision of the assigned administrator, the Facilities Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for a wide variety of tasks associated with the repair and maintenance of the interior and exterior of buildings and structures on campus. This role involves providing instruction and direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants, scheduling crew activities, and reporting repairs to the Customer Service Center supervisor. The position also requires providing sketches, estimated costs, and ensuring materials and tools are available and staged at job sites. The Facilities Operation Department, Beach Building Services (BBS), supports the university by ensuring the safe operation, maintenance, and development of the campus, providing comprehensive facilities support for academics, activities, and event services.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience leading to journey-level skills in a mechanical or facilities/building trade required.
  • Valid California driver's license required.
  • Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
  • Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
  • Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on University business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.
  • Must reside in the State of California upon date of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Provides instruction and direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants within the carpenter shop and other applicable areas.
  • Schedules crew activities and reports all repairs not covered by the team to the Customer Service Center supervisor on a daily basis.
  • Provides sketches, estimated costs, and all other required information in support of the program.
  • Provides instruction and support for the scheduling of activities of the team and reporting of all other required repairs not covered by the team such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and elevator repairs to the Customer Service Center supervisor on a daily basis.
  • Accountable for all materials to be available at the job site and arrange for secure staging of materials and tools within the structure.
  • Perform basic repairs to furniture, ceramic tile, floor and ceiling tiles, chalkboards, bulletin boards, and picture displays.
  • Replace lighting fixtures as needed.
  • Effectively support university ceremonies, special events, functions, and emergency response efforts.
