About The Position

Responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled to skilled work in the maintenance and repair of the City’s water and wastewater pump stations, buildings, facilities, heavy duty and specialized equipment and grounds. An employee in this class performs a variety of tasks related to the maintenance and repair activities associated with City-owned water and wastewater pump stations, buildings, facilities and grounds. Work includes performing various maintenance tasks such as electrical, mechanical and plumbing repairs to pump stations, buildings, grounds and related facilities. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor and is reviewed for lasting quality, effectiveness, appearance and functionality through conference, inspection and records.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in semi-skilled to skilled trades work such as plumbing, electrical and mechanical repair (for Mechanic I)
  • Three (3) years of experience in skilled trades such as plumbing, electrical and mechanical repair (for Mechanic II)
  • Five (5) years of experience in skilled trades such as plumbing, electrical and mechanical repair (for Mechanic III)
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle
  • Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment utilized in plumbing, mechanical and limited electrical trades work.
  • Knowledge of plumbing, mechanical, water hydraulics and limited electrical maintenance and repair techniques.
  • Knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned area of work.
  • Knowledge of city purchasing procedures.
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and its operation.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to use varied equipment required in performance of duties.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the general public.
  • Ability to keep accurate records of materials used.
  • Ability to set appropriate priorities and work productively without close supervision.
  • Ability to identify and report maintenance needs or safety issues to the supervisor.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a NC Grade C Water Distribution System Operator certification; or NC Grade I Wastewater Collection System Operator certification; or NC Grade I Maintenance Technologist certification; or ability to obtain one or more within 18 months of employment (for Mechanic I)
  • Possession of NC Water Distribution System Operator Grade B; or NC Grade II Wastewater Collection System Operator certification; or NC Grade II Maintenance Technologist certification (for Mechanic II)
  • Confined Space Certified (for Mechanic II and III)
  • Trenching and Shoring Certified (for Mechanic II)
  • Fall Protection Certified (for Mechanic II and III)
  • CPR and First Aid Certified (for Mechanic II and III)
  • Flagger Certification (for Mechanic II and III)
  • Lock out Tag out Certified (for Mechanic II and III)
  • ARC Flash training (for Mechanic II and III)
  • Must have worked as Facilities Maintenance Mechanic I for a minimum of 1 year (for Mechanic II)
  • Possession of NC Grade II Maintenance Technologist certification and NC Water Distribution System Operator Grade B; or, NC Grade III Wastewater Collection System Operator certification or Possession of NC Grade III Maintenance Technologist Certification (for Mechanic III)
  • Trenching and Shoring Competent Person Certified (for Mechanic III)
  • Must be Facilities Maintenance Tech II for a minimum of 1 year (for Mechanic III)
  • Other related experience in equivalent position(s) will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of maintenance tasks including routine maintenance and repair activities associated with the City’s water and wastewater pumping stations and water storage tanks.
  • Performs journey level maintenance on heavy duty and specialized water and sewer equipment; troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing and maintaining water and sewer pumps and motors.
  • Performs regular preventive maintenance, which includes checking lubrication on water and sewer pumps and motors and having the ability to recognize issues with this equipment
  • May perform limited electrical troubleshooting and repairs but only at the direction and supervision of a City approved “Qualified Electrical Professional”. Level of work performed will be based on level of knowledge, training, and experience of the individual. Expectations will be defined by the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Maintains grounds surrounding pump station and water storage tank sites and associated rights-of-way.
  • Troubleshoots problems and performs skilled plumbing and mechanical repairs.
  • Obtains materials, supplies, tools and equipment using established purchasing procedures.
  • Keeps records of work activities in Cityworks
  • Serves time on standby and answers after hours call for emergencies.
  • Assists in other divisions as needed.
  • Participates in the City's safety program and adheres to safety procedures and policies.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.
