About The Position

The Sawdust Art Festival, a premier non-profit organization in Laguna Beach, CA, is seeking an enthusiastic, self-driven Facilities & Maintenance Director. This is a multifaceted "Working Director" role responsible for the operations, maintenance, and strategic vision of their multi-acre property. The position involves a blend of hands-on light construction (framing, carpentry, electrical), general maintenance, and high-level administrative duties, including managing a significant 5-to-7-year capital improvement project. The Director will work closely with a lean off-season crew on seasonal structure builds and manage a larger seasonal staff during the summer to oversee site cleaning, trash mitigation, and restroom sanitization for a high volume of visitors.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in facilities maintenance and light construction.
  • Non-negotiable managerial and project management experience.
  • Strong hands-on mechanical skills, including framing, rough carpentry, and MEP knowledge.
  • Strong ability to utilize technology, such as a CMMS, project management software, Google suite, MS365, etc.
  • Dynamic time management abilities to seamlessly shift between physical labor, supervision, and high-level administrative tasks.
  • Ability to comfortably lift 75 pounds, stand or walk for long periods, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • A good attitude, and ability to be a team leader and a team player.
  • Fluency in English is required.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary project manager for a multi-year property overhaul, including rebuilding permanent structures and overhauling underground piping and cabling.
  • Work actively with the year-round crew to physically build out Towne Square and other seasonal infrastructure (fencing, gazebos, light posts).
  • Monitor and perform routine maintenance on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems, ensuring compliance with ADA accessibility standards and safety protocols.
  • Negotiate and coordinate routine inspections and emergency repairs with outside vendors, including primary landscaping and tree trimming contracts, standpipes, fire extinguishers, hoods, and more.
  • Maintain a high standard for the customer experience, including clean landscaping, managing cobwebs, ensuring tables are clean, water stations are operable, and touch-up paint is handled promptly.
  • Keep active lists of tasks in progress, calendared, or waiting to be calendared or budgeted, from regular maintenance needs to specific projects.
  • Direct the year-round maintenance crew, proactively developing a friendly, energetic, and detail-oriented team environment.
  • Oversee the daily direction of the seasonal workforce responsible for high-volume site cleaning, trash mitigation, and restroom sanitization for 200,000 annual visitors.
  • Manage department schedules and time-tracking via Paycom, track project budgets, and create clear maintenance reports for executive leadership.
  • Collaborate with the general manager on large, strategic projects and plans, while owning the regular, annual cycle duties and responsibilities of the department.
