About The Position

Responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all industrial equipment across the department’s laundry facility, print shop, and mail operations. Requires advanced troubleshooting and repair skills, manufacturer certifications, and independent judgment to balance in-house maintenance with vendor service contracts. Designs and implements preventative maintenance programs, manages parts and tools inventory, trains student staff, and provides strategic input on equipment purchases. Acts as the primary liaison with Physical Facilities and external vendors to support uninterrupted production. Plays a critical role in minimizing downtime, reducing operational costs, and extending the life cycle of major industrial assets. Expected to contribute to strategic decision-making through data-driven maintenance reports, cost analysis, and capital investment recommendations.

Requirements

Must have 5+ years’ experience in maintenance, equipment repair, mechanical systems, or an equivalent technical field.
Must have demonstrated ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and electronic systems.
Must have experience leading, training, or supervising staff or student workers in a technical environment.
Must have experience developing and implementing preventative maintenance programs.
Must have at least 1 year of experience in maintenance for industrial laundry and industrial printing operations.
Must have experience using maintenance software, performance metrics, or CMMS to track repairs and equipment reliability.
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are required to hold and be worthy to hold a current temple recommend to be hired and to remain in any position at BYU.

Nice To Haves

10+ years of industrial maintenance experience.
Manufacturer certifications in laundry, printing, or mail equipment.
Supervisory experience in facilities or production environment.
Experience negotiating vendor contracts and managing service agreements.
OSHA 30 certification or equivalent advanced safety training.
Associate or bachelor’s degree in industrial technology, engineering, or related field strongly preferred
Certifications in PLC programming, electrical systems, or reliability engineering.

Responsibilities

Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair industrial laundry, print, and mail equipment.
Obtain and maintain manufacturer certifications, enabling direct parts purchasing and cancellation of unnecessary vendor maintenance contracts.
Evaluate repair complexity and coordinate with external specialists when required.
Advise management on cost-effectiveness of in-house versus vendor maintenance.
Interpret technical schematics, PLC programs, and electronic control systems to support advanced troubleshooting.
Ensure all repairs meet industry safety and reliability standards.
Develop, implement, and monitor preventative maintenance schedules for all equipment.
Maintain critical spare parts and tools to minimize downtime.
Ensure compliance with OSHA safety standards, lockout/tagout, and PPE requirements.
Establish routine care programs carried out by student staff.
Implement computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or equivalent tracking tools to document maintenance activities.
Respond rapidly to urgent breakdowns to keep laundry, printing, and mail operations running.
Provide temporary workarounds while awaiting parts or service.
Offer input on new equipment purchases, considering lifecycle costs and maintainability.
Develop contingency plans to maintain operational continuity during extended outages.
Serve as liaison with campus Physical Facilities, balancing collaboration with departmental independence in equipment maintenance.
Manage vendor relationships and procurement agreements for parts and service.
Provide input on vendor negotiations and budgeting for service contracts.
Act as the technical expert during contract negotiations to ensure service agreements deliver value and measurable performance outcomes.
Recruit, train, and supervise student maintenance crew members.
Develop training programs and performance standards for routine maintenance tasks.
Maintain documentation of procedures and knowledge transfer.
Mentor student staff to build practical technical skills, creating a pipeline of future talent for the university.
Maintain logs, track downtime, and report key performance data.
Contribute to budgeting and forecasting for maintenance and capital costs.
Ensure compliance with safety policies and hazard management across all facilities.
Analyze maintenance trends to identify root causes of failures and recommend long-term reliability improvements.
Participate in safety audits, risk assessments, and emergency response planning.
