About The Position

NIST is seeking a Facilities Electrical Engineer in the Boulder Facilities Maintenance Division of the Office of Facilities and Property Management. The division supports the operational reliability, safety, and modernization of campus infrastructure, including utility distribution, laboratory construction, and facility maintenance, in support of scientific research. This position provides technical expertise in facility electrical design, maintenance, and operations; oversees laboratory renovation projects; and serves as an electrical safety subject matter expert. The role designs, modifies, and optimizes research facility utility distribution systems and laboratory spaces. It provides technical oversight for campus electrical infrastructure, including medium-voltage networks, low-voltage power distribution, networked fire alarm systems, and fiber optic cabling. The engineer performs power system studies to support safety, reliability, and code compliance, and serves as a Contracting Officer Representative for architect/engineering design and construction contracts. The position also provides safety coaching, technical reviews, and low- and medium-voltage switching support.

Requirements

  • Meet the engineering education basic requirement through an acceptable engineering degree, qualifying combination of education and experience, professional registration or licensure, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering examination or another qualifying written test, specified academic coursework, or an accepted related curriculum combined with professional engineering experience.
  • Have one year of specialized experience at the GS-12 level (ZP-III at NIST).
  • Have experience performing facility electrical engineering design or technical analysis, such as evaluating medium- or low-voltage power distribution systems, conducting short-circuit, time-current coordination, or arc flash studies, or preparing technical drawings, calculations, and specifications.
  • Have experience providing technical oversight for facility electrical operations, maintenance, or capital projects, such as conducting constructability or safety reviews, performing electrical switching operations, or monitoring design, construction, or maintenance contracts.
  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Be suitable for Federal employment and satisfactorily complete a pre-employment medical examination.

  • Provide an evaluation with a course-by-course listing for education completed outside the United States, if relying on foreign education.

Responsibilities

  • Design, modify, and optimize research facility utility distribution systems and laboratory spaces.
  • Prepare engineering drawings, cost estimates, constructability reviews, and technical specifications.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and technical oversight for campus electrical infrastructure, including 13.2 kV medium-voltage networks, 480V to 120/208V low-voltage power distribution, networked fire alarm systems, and fiber optic cabling.
  • Perform power system engineering studies, including short-circuit availability, time-current coordination, and arc flash analysis.
  • Serve as a Contracting Officer Representative for architect/engineering design and construction contracts.
  • Provide electrical safety coaching, technical reviews, and low- and medium-voltage switching support.
  • Provide engineering expertise in utility distribution, laboratory construction, and facility maintenance.

Benefits

  • Federal employee benefits package for employees and their families.
