About The Position

The Agora Companies are seeking an experienced Facilities Director to lead the stewardship, maintenance, and capital improvements for their historic buildings. This is a highly visible role for a candidate with technical expertise, operational discipline, and a deep appreciation for historic preservation. The company is located in Baltimore's Mount Vernon neighborhood and operates within a unique campus of architectural gems.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in property management, building operations, the building trades, and/or construction management
  • Experience with historic properties highly desired
  • Proven management experience with vendors as well as facilities and housekeeping teams.
  • Strong working knowledge of one or more trades such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, or HVAC.
  • Experience with contractor bidding, vendor negotiations, and project oversight.
  • Proven budget and financial management skills.
  • Experience working with executives, ownership groups, or shareholders.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to delegate effectively and hold team members accountable.
  • Experience with Baltimore historic permitting and CHAP approvals is strongly preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience managing restoration or adaptive reuse projects in landmark buildings.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, a related field or equivalent experience
  • Professional certifications such as CFM, FMP, or CPM.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee preventative maintenance, repairs, and building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, roofing, and life safety.
  • Ensure all buildings are well cleaned, safe, and operating at a high standard for employees and visitors.
  • Respond to urgent maintenance issues when needed and coordinate appropriate solutions.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a facilities and housekeeping team of 7–10 employees.
  • Assign and prioritize daily maintenance, custodial, and repair responsibilities.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, responsiveness and quality work.
  • Manage employee performance including hiring and termination decisions.
  • Maintain and preserve the integrity of historic properties inside and out.
  • Coordinate restoration and renovation work in compliance with local preservation guidelines.
  • Obtain historic approvals and permit submissions as needed.
  • Solicit and evaluate bids for maintenance and capital projects.
  • Select, negotiate with, and oversee contractors and service providers.
  • Ensure work is completed on time, within budget, and to specification.
  • Prepare and manage annual operating and capital budgets for various properties.
  • Track expenditures and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Work in collaboration with senior leadership and shareholders on major renovation and capital improvement initiatives.
  • Provide regular updates to executives and stakeholders.
  • Maintain clear documentation, project plans, and status reports.
  • Be a professional and responsive point of contact for external partners.
