Facilities Controls Engineer (North Texas)

Texas Instruments•Richardson, TX

About The Position

Texas Instruments is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Controls Engineer to join its Facilities Central Engineering team in North Texas. The role maintains, troubleshoots, and improves controls systems supporting 365x24x7 manufacturing operations. It leads the engineering lifecycle for critical facility systems, including air handling, exhaust, water treatment, drain systems, electrical power monitoring, and life safety and hazardous gas monitoring. The engineer drives capital and expense projects focused on reliability, technology innovation, cost savings, and obsolescence management, working with manufacturing teams to understand utility-system impacts on processes and reduce consumption. The position serves as an engineering escalation point for 24/7 operations and provides technical leadership for controls projects, including design, engineering, and commissioning. It also develops and maintains technical documentation, supports mentoring and training for early-career controls engineers and technicians, and develops and reviews operational and maintenance procedures. Texas Instruments will not sponsor visa or work authorization applicants for this position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related degree.
  • At least 5 years of relevant controls engineering experience in an industrial or facilities environment.
  • Hands-on experience programming and troubleshooting Siemens PLCs.
  • Ability to prioritize and work under broad direction to resolve new and complex problems.
  • Advanced experience with SCADA systems in an operational or configuration capacity.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including documenting and communicating design intent and sequences of operations to cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, interrupt-driven environment with high system uptime requirements.
  • Proficiency with virtualization, Windows Server, and PC hardware.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency with Siemens TIA Portal (S7-1200/1500) and/or Classic Step 7 (S7-300/400); Siemens PLC experience is the most critical technical differentiator for the role.
  • Experience with Wago PLC platforms (CoDeSys) and Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation PLCs.
  • Familiarity with SCADA and Historian platforms such as Aveva System Platform, Iconics, Siemens PCS7, Zenon CopaData, and SQL.
  • Experience with industrial network design, configuration, and troubleshooting; Cisco and/or Hirschmann equipment preferred.
  • Knowledge of controls applications for facility process systems, including air handling, exhaust, water treatment, life safety, and power monitoring.
  • Understanding of PID loop tuning, Function Block Diagram and structured text programming, and alarm and trend analysis.
  • Ability to read and interpret low-voltage wiring diagrams and P&IDs.
  • Experience starting up and commissioning new controls systems.
  • Experience with FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) processes.
  • Familiarity with Root Cause Analysis methodologies such as 3x5 Why, 4-Corner Analysis, and Cause Map.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects and coordinate contractor work in the field.
  • Experience in a semiconductor fab or data center environment.
  • Familiarity with LLM platforms such as Anthropic Claude and ability to assess their potential benefits, limitations, and safety and operational risks when applied to industrial control and automation solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the engineering escalation point for the 24/7 operations team, troubleshooting controllers, instrumentation, and controls systems across critical manufacturing facility systems.
  • Provide engineering expertise for controls systems and infrastructure covering air handling, exhaust, de-ionized water, cooling, hot and potable water, drain systems, electrical power monitoring, and life safety systems.
  • Drive controls-scope projects independently from initiation through completion, including design, engineering, and commissioning.
  • Provide technical leadership on large-scale, multi-discipline projects.
  • Develop and maintain controls documentation, including Sequences of Operations, P&IDs, I/O lists, and panel and wiring drawings.
  • Support mentoring, training, and development of early-career controls engineers and technicians.
  • Develop and review operational and maintenance procedures to ensure best practices are documented, standardized, and implemented.
  • Drive capital and expense projects focused on reliability, technology innovation, cost savings, and obsolescence management.
  • Work with manufacturing teams to understand utility-system impacts on processes and identify ways to reduce consumption.
