About The Position

Performs skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work to ensure that facilities are properly maintained. Conducts monthly preventive maintenance inspections of facility operating equipment and grounds at multiple locations. Duties may fall into a variety of construction trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and painting. The Facilities Construction Specialist is distinguished by the responsibility for a wide variety of non-routine assignments across multiple trades. The Construction Specialist will perform remodel work on SunLine facilities and will assist with outside contractors. Provides input into maintaining and repairing buildings, facilities, and operating equipment to provide a safe and clean work environment in accordance with all applicable codes and regulations. The incumbent ensures that preventative maintenance procedures are completed in accordance with the Facilities Maintenance Plan.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the construction and maintenance industries.
  • Knowledge of standard practices, methods, and techniques used in industrial engineering, building systems engineering, and commercial building construction and repair.
  • Knowledge of building and environmental codes, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to the work.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, plans, blueprints, and electrical schematics.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain a wide variety of equipment, hand, shop, and power tools.
  • Ability to plan, organize, coordinate, and evaluate building, facilities, and operating equipment maintenance and repair operations.
  • Ability to utilize practices, methods, and techniques for preventive maintenance programs applicable to assigned responsibilities.
  • Ability to use an array of tools: mig welder, plasma cutter, cutting torch, hand grinder, circular saw, drills, table saw, drill press, hand tools, paint sprayers, light equipment, etc.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use a computer to maintain logs, respond to work requests and emails, and monitor and manage work orders in the facility maintenance help desk.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and complete records and reports of work completed and other written materials.
  • Ability to exercise sound independent judgment and initiative within general policy guidelines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Agency managers, employees, suppliers, union representatives, and others encountered in the course of work.
  • High School graduate or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • At least five years of construction trade experience, facilities maintenance and repair experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • A valid California Class C driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Agency’s vehicle insurance policy.

Responsibilities

  • Performs preventive maintenance on building systems, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and related components, filling out reports and making recommendations.
  • Repairs and maintains a variety of facilities systems, equipment, components, and structures, including constructing and maintaining indoor/outdoor facilities, doors & hardware, compressors, pumps, cooling equipment, generators, and operable gates.
  • Builds, fabricates, or repairs structures, equipment, and/or miscellaneous articles from verbal instructions, blueprints, and/or working drawings.
  • Welds, solders, and grinds materials for various fabrication methods.
  • Climbs ladders and works from scaffolding or equipment.
  • Works extended hours outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Performs electronic record keeping related to preventive maintenance inspections and repairs, tracking and closing assigned work orders.
  • Ensures adherence to Agency safety policies and procedures, monitoring to ensure safe work practices are followed, and understanding safety procedures associated with construction, electrical, and equipment maintenance.
  • Maintains appropriate records and reports electronically.
  • Provides back-up support to other departments and staff as required.
  • Maintains SunLine tools and keeps records of tools in stock and their maintenance.
  • Assists facility techs as requested to complete work orders.
