About The Position

Fabricators operate various machines and hand tools in the fabrication department that cut, shape or grind sheet metal such as shears, brake press, hand grinders, insert press or punch or drill press. Fabricators use various hand tools to assemble components according to print and specifications. Higher skill levels operate CNC equipment, program, edit programs, and adjust machine controls and set-up work. This role involves operating machines to produce required quantities of parts within specified tolerance limits, monitoring machine performance, and monitoring part quality. Employees may be required to perform basic assembly operations, operate secondary operation machines, and record job/production data. Responsibilities include positioning, lifting, aligning, and securing work pieces, removing burrs and sharp edges, measuring completed work pieces to verify conformance to specifications, and examining completed work pieces for defects. The role also requires handling and lifting raw materials, tools, and fixtures, and maintaining a clean work area and equipment. Consistent attendance and punctuality are essential. The position is structured in three levels: Level 1 (Entry Level, Operate Only) performs or operates machines to produce required quantities of parts within specified tolerance limits, monitors machine performance, and monitors part quality, working under general supervision. Level 2 (Set Up and Operate, established repeat parts) possesses Level 1 skills and can set up and operate a variety of machines, including CNC Machines, to produce more difficult parts, verifying alignment and consistently producing repeat parts accurately, generally requiring trade school or equivalent work experience. Level 3 (Set Up and Operate new first run parts) possesses Level 1 & 2 skills and can set up to run new parts of higher complexity, including entering control panel settings and/or programming CNC equipment, working with minimal supervision, and possessing problem-solving skills to assist with training new personnel, generally requiring trade school or equivalent work experience and significant fabrication experience.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED required for entry level.
  • Prior experience not required for entry level, but must display an aptitude to learn.
  • Related experience and/or post-secondary education in the trades are required for advanced skill level ranking.
  • Possess basic computer skills to interface with the Company's computer programs for recording time worked and job operations.
  • Willingness to work different shifts when assigned.
  • Willingness to cross-train and work in different departments.
  • Ability to perform job tasks to meet expectations on hire or within the 1st year of employment (Level 1).
  • Ability to set up and operate a variety of machines including CNC Machines (Level 2).
  • Ability to verify alignment using measurement instruments (Level 2).
  • Ability to consistently produce repeat parts accurately (Level 2).
  • Ability to set up to run first-time new parts of a higher complexity level (Level 3).
  • Ability to enter control panel settings and/or program CNC equipment (Level 3).
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision (Level 3).
  • Possess problem-solving skills (Level 3).

Nice To Haves

  • Generally post-secondary education in Fabrication or Machining or equivalent work experience in the trades would be required for advanced skill positions.
  • Generally requires trade school (or equivalent work experience) combined with some previous on-the-job experience (Level 2).
  • Generally requires trade school (or equivalent work experience) and significant work experience in fabrication (Level 3).

Responsibilities

  • Operate various machines and hand tools to cut, shape, or grind sheet metal.

  • Monitor own work and record job/production data.

  • Position, lift, align, and secure work pieces.
  • Remove burrs and sharp edges.
  • Measure completed work pieces to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Examine completed work pieces for defects and sort defective pieces.
  • Independently handle, lift, and move raw materials, tools, and fixtures.
  • Keep work area and equipment clean.
  • Follow department procedures for care of equipment.
  • Attend work consistently and be punctual.
  • Set up and operate machines for established repeat parts (Level 2).
  • Set up and operate machines for new first-run parts of higher complexity (Level 3).
  • Enter control panel settings and/or program CNC equipment (Level 3).
  • Assist with training new personnel (Level 3).
