Fabricators operate various machines and hand tools in the fabrication department that cut, shape or grind sheet metal such as shears, brake press, hand grinders, insert press or punch or drill press. Fabricators use various hand tools to assemble components according to print and specifications. Higher skill levels operate CNC equipment, program, edit programs, and adjust machine controls and set-up work. This role involves operating machines to produce required quantities of parts within specified tolerance limits, monitoring machine performance, and monitoring part quality. Employees may be required to perform basic assembly operations, operate secondary operation machines, and record job/production data. Responsibilities include positioning, lifting, aligning, and securing work pieces, removing burrs and sharp edges, measuring completed work pieces to verify conformance to specifications, and examining completed work pieces for defects. The role also requires handling and lifting raw materials, tools, and fixtures, and maintaining a clean work area and equipment. Consistent attendance and punctuality are essential. The position is structured in three levels: Level 1 (Entry Level, Operate Only) performs or operates machines to produce required quantities of parts within specified tolerance limits, monitors machine performance, and monitors part quality, working under general supervision. Level 2 (Set Up and Operate, established repeat parts) possesses Level 1 skills and can set up and operate a variety of machines, including CNC Machines, to produce more difficult parts, verifying alignment and consistently producing repeat parts accurately, generally requiring trade school or equivalent work experience. Level 3 (Set Up and Operate new first run parts) possesses Level 1 & 2 skills and can set up to run new parts of higher complexity, including entering control panel settings and/or programming CNC equipment, working with minimal supervision, and possessing problem-solving skills to assist with training new personnel, generally requiring trade school or equivalent work experience and significant fabrication experience.
