The Fabrication Specialist: Wood position is within the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design. This role involves overseeing operations and supervising technical assistants, student assistants, and others to ensure safety and provide training for the Wood Lab facilities. The Specialist assists with planning for future equipment and space needs, processes lab pertinent work orders with Facilities Management, and ensures clean, organized, and ordered fabrication work areas. The Wood Specialist works closely with students to effectively assist and mentor them in using the facility to leverage talents and build skills to help find fabrication solutions to their problems. This position is responsible for coordinating and collaborating to assist students and faculty in implementing new fabrication technologies and methods while providing support in curriculum, research, and publications related to wood technologies. The Wood Specialist assists in specialty projects related to the school’s outreach and public engagement. Administrative duties include responsibly overseeing the Wood Lab facilities budget under the direction of the Fabrication Manager and Dean’s office. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education, in Architecture, Design, or a related field
  • At least two years or more experience in fabrication, construction, or design-related setting
  • Experience with lab equipment listed in an architecture or design context such as various power saws, drills, sanders & milling machines
  • Experience with multiple material fabrication techniques
  • Knowledge and abilities of traditional fabrication assemblies and techniques (woodworking, metal working)
  • Working knowledge or experience of contemporary fabrication (CNC mill, 3D Printing, Laser Engraving)
  • Leadership skills in delegating, collaborating, prioritizing work in the facility
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills to effectively supervise staff and ability to communicate clearly with faculty and students

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Experience using and/or managing traditional and digital fabrication tools and equipment in a workshop environment, preferably within an academic or research setting, or the ability and willingness to gain proficiency
  • Experience working in an educational environment
  • Software skill related to digital technology and fabrication (CAM, Rhinoceros 3D, Grasshopper, Adobe Suite)
  • OSHA Certified
