About The Position

Supervises technical personnel in the fabrication and re-manufacturing of public transit vehicle parts, assemblies, and equipment. Plans, organizes, and assigns work for fabrication shops. Develops and maintains computer and manual files for payroll, attendance, project budgets, and production activities; prepares daily reports. Implements and maintains safety programs. Ensures compliance and promotes aspects of the Environmental Management System to employees and coworkers. Conducts meetings to inform employees about safety, tool uses, equipment upgrade projects, and other related topics. Investigates and reports accidents and injuries. Follows up on ordered parts, equipment, and supplies; administers warranty claims. Counsels subordinates on compliance with procedures, rules, and regulations. Conducts first-level disciplinary and grievance hearings. Analyzes structural failures, identifies problems, and plans and provides assistance to staff to remedy problems. Conducts meetings to determine users' needs. Approves completed work/repairs. Prepares various reports, develops presentations, and oversees special development projects. Supervises subordinate staff, accounts for subordinate and personal compliance with all of Metro's safety rules, polices, and procedures. May be required to perform other related job duties.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in a related field or equivalent training from a recognized trade school
  • Four years of relevant journey-level experience performing machinist work in the manufacture, assembly, installation, and/or repair of parts and equipment, special tooling, jigs, and fixtures
  • A minimum of two years of relevant experience operating a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) mill and lathe
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
  • Knowledge of theories, principles, and practices of safe and proper use of tools and other equipment
  • Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations governing maintenance, repair, and procurement of public transit vehicles
  • Knowledge of project planning and budgeting techniques
  • Knowledge of principles of supervision
  • Knowledge of Title 13 of the California Code of Regulations
  • Proficiency in Computer Automated Manufacturing (CAM) software and G & M Codes required to work with multiple axis mills and lathes
  • Knowledge of industrial mathematics
  • Knowledge of basic properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals
  • Knowledge of welding and sheet metal fabrication techniques
  • Skill in exercising judgment and creativity in making recommendations
  • Skill in meeting productivity demands
  • Skill in communicating effectively orally and in writing
  • Skill in analyzing situations, identifying problems, and recommending solutions
  • Ability to plan, organize, and monitor the work of technical personnel engaged in the fabrication and re-manufacturing of parts, assemblies and equipment for public transit vehicles
  • Ability to operate a vertical mill, horizontal mill and lathe
  • Ability to drill, mill, turn and grind ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, and other exotic materials for fabrication and remanufacturing
  • Ability to read simple and complex prints and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) drawings
  • Ability to interpret CAD drawings and convert desired results into final finished production products with an understanding of geometric dimension and tolerances (GOT)
  • Ability to read analog and digital gauges; interpret damaged and failed items to conclude results of tensile and shear testing
  • Ability to operate computers and Maintenance & Material Management (M3) program terminals and diagnostic equipment
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, contracts, budgets, and labor/management agreements
  • Ability to interact professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives
  • Ability to supervise subordinate staff
  • Ability to travel to various Metro offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English

Nice To Haves

  • Experience welding, fabricating sheet metal, and/or reverse engineering materials is preferred
  • Frequent exposure to weather, physical, electrical, mechanical, and chemical hazards
  • Shift work
