About The Position

The Fayetteville Public Library is seeking a Fabrication & Robotics Lab Coordinator to manage the operations of the Robotics Fab Lab. This role involves developing and enforcing usage policies, coordinating lab schedules, and ensuring all equipment is maintained and in good working order. The coordinator will also be responsible for teaching STEM, robotics, electronics, and coding programs for various age groups, and potentially developing grant proposals to expand library services. This position requires excellent customer service, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job education in a specific skill area equivalent to a four-year college degree, plus 2 years related experience and/or training, and 2 years related management experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • High language skills including ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and group situations with customers, clients, general public and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Basic math skills including the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • High reasoning skills including the ability to solve practical problems and deal with several variables where only limited standardization exists and the ability to communicate this information.
  • High computer skills including knowledge of office productivity software and ability to operate standard office equipment.
  • Familiarity of technologies used in Center for Innovation, including but not limited to: 2D and 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) such as Fusion 360 or AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, and 3D printing software.
  • Familiarity of technologies used in Center for Innovation, including but not limited to: 3D printers, laser cutters, Arduino/Raspberry Pi, soldering irons, and CNC routers.
  • Excellent customer service skills including the ability to resolve difficult customer situations.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively greet and establish rapport with patrons, enthusiastically engaging them in conversations about all of our materials and services.
  • Provide exemplary customer service in-person in the Center for Innovation and at all locations throughout the library.
  • Answer directional and general questions about library programs and services and refer callers and visitors to the appropriate staff member or service desk.
  • Lead department peers and colleagues to also execute these behaviors consistently.
  • Staff Center for Innovation suites and desks as needed.
  • Effectively communicate to patrons regarding a variety of topics including, but not limited to, library products and services, policies, responsibilities, and code of conduct.
  • Blend creativity, problem solving, and decision making to positively impact the customer experience, de-escalate any negative situations and resolve customer questions and concerns.
  • Lead and train staff to execute these same behaviors.
  • Monitor customer feedback.
  • Diffuse difficult, volatile, and/or inappropriate customer situations, keeping safety in mind.
  • Ask open ended questions to assess, understand, and ascertain the customer needs, determine how to tailor your approach, and provide recommendations using your institutional knowledge to connect our customer with the right solution.
  • Provide detailed assistance, technical assistance, and exemplary frontline customer service, possessing advanced knowledge of Center for Innovation, Fab Lab, and technology resources.
  • Oversee operations of the Robotics Fab Lab including the development and regular review of usage and access policies in collaboration with the Center for Innovation Manager.
  • Coordinate and schedule use of the Fabrication and Robotics Lab.
  • Operate and help others safely operate the Fab Lab tools, including the laser cutter, 3D printers, robotics kits, electronics, vinyl cutter, hand tools, power tools, etc.
  • Consistently demonstrate and model knowledge of safety equipment and procedures.
  • Carry out job responsibilities in a manner that minimizes the risk of injury to yourself, other staff, vendors, customers, and the Library.
  • Maintain all equipment in like new condition.
  • Ensure that the Fab Lab equipment is in proper working order and report the requirement for repair or service.
  • Recommend requirements for new or additional equipment to enhance training opportunities for the Fab Lab and Center for Innovation as a whole.
  • Design and teach relevant programs in STEM, robotics, electronics, computing coding and other technologies for all age ranges.
  • Speak, instruct and/or perform in front of library and outreach audiences (frequently up to 750+ participants).
  • Recommend potential programming and respond to requests from other library departments regarding opening access to services offered in the Fab Lab.
  • Research and develop grant proposals in coordination with CFI manager and Development department to enhance and expand library services.
  • Ensure grant compliance and accurate reporting as assigned.
  • Participate in meetings and activities of the department and the library.
  • Assist with library services, programs, events, and outreach opportunities as needed.
  • Pursue professional development to keep informed of current and emerging library trends, particularly as related to emerging technology, technology training, and library trends.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge through attendance of educational workshops, seminars, and webinars, review of professional publications, establishment of networks, and participation in professional organizations.
  • Drive a motor vehicle to attend meetings and visit various work sites.
  • Collaborate with supervisor on departmental projects to ensure the smooth operation of the department.
  • Conduct special projects as assigned.
  • Represent your department on various library committees as assigned.
  • Help orient new staff, ensuring a smooth acclimation to the library and our culture.
  • Train new staff members as assigned.
  • Scheduling responsibilities as assigned.
  • Mentor and train Fab Lab volunteers.
  • Display excellent time management skills, attention to detail, problem solving skills, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work proactively to balance multiple tasks and prioritize work.
  • Complete work at an appropriate pace with a sense of urgency.
