About The Position

Join our team and help shape our future Military Leadership! Our work is both Rewarding and Interesting. Preparing new uniforms for the incoming Plebe class, performing sizing alterations for all Midshipmen, and repairing uniforms when maintenance is needed, our staff works directly with Midshipmen, military and civilian staff. Weekday, 8-hour shifts, with rare weekend shifts in support of workload. This position is located in the Midshipmen Repair Tailor Shop, part of the U. S. Naval Academy's Non-Appropriated Fund Instrumentality (NAFI), Naval Academy Business Services Division (NABSD), Annapolis, Maryland. NAFI is an entity that generates its own funds through its operations, and is not funded by Congress. The Fabric Worker is occasionally required to work in alternative work spaces. Incumbent alters garments, and replaces parts that are damaged. Incumbent lets out or takes in side seams, hems pants and skirts, attaches insignia, manufactures brigade flags, and removes sleeve lace.

Requirements

  • Experience performing Fabric Working duties, which may include, but are not limited to measuring and fitting, sewing by hand and by machine, working with various materials (wood, cotton, leather, etc.), pressing garments, repairing defects, etc.
  • Ability to lift items up to 10 pounds, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time, and continually use arms, hands, and fingers in pulling and positioning materials while sewing and using tools.
  • Experience using measuring tape, chalk and pins for marking garments to fit customer (reduce chest, lengthen or shorten pants and skirts, attach insignia, etc).
  • Experience sewing by hand.
  • Experience using various tailoring machines (industrial straight stitch, blind stitch, serger and merrow, electric irons and commercial steam presses.
  • Experience maintaining a satisfactory production level with established deadlines.
  • Experience in customer service with strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Measures customers, fits and marks garments.
  • Lets-out or takes-in garments. Shortens collars, sets shoulders and sleeves, and replaces parts that are damaged. Reduces chests, narrows lapels, and relines coats and skirts; tapers skirts, trousers and shirts and re-pads shoulders. Inserts gussets in coats, overcoats and reefers; replaces zippers in pants, skirts, coats and jackets; fabricates and recuts trousers.
  • Manufactures Brigade Flags; stripe and sew insignias on clothing; constructs new collars, new buttonholes and reconditions old buttonholes; receives garments.
  • Uses various electrical machines to achieve desired results.
  • Keeps work area clean and obey all safety regulations.
  • Physical effort includes standing, sitting for long periods of time; stooping, bending, kneeling; lifting up to 10 pounds.
