The Fabrication Welder sets up and welds together metal components of products such as pipe, flanges, extensions, and plates. This role involves identifying, manually welding, and repairing defects in welded pipe using electric arc-welding equipment. The welder is responsible for following all safety policies and initiating safety improvements. They will set up and operate welding machines in the fabrication of metal products and assemblies, striking an arc and manually guiding the electrode or gun along the weld line. This requires maintaining the correct arc length and speed to achieve the specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged by the metal's color, weld sound, and molten puddle size. The welder will perform welds in flat, horizontal, and vertical positions and conduct self-examinations of welds for bead size, surface finish, and compliance with drawings and specifications. Responsibilities also include cleaning and degreasing weld joints, chipping off excess weld, slag, and spatter, and positioning and clamping work pieces or assembling them in jigs or fixtures, including tacking assemblies together. The role requires identifying areas of pipe needing repair, either pre-marked by inspectors or through visual inspection, and positioning pipe on a repair rack to facilitate the repair process. This includes performing necessary preparatory work such as grinding and preheating. The position requires compliance with all safety rules and minimal supervision to accomplish essential functions. Successful passing of all annual weld tests is mandatory. Other duties may be assigned by management, including cross-training and housekeeping.
