About The Position

The Extraction Technician is an on-site manufacturing role concentrating on hydrocarbon and ethanol extraction activities, including extraction, recovery, purging, and decarboxylation. This role involves managing and training staff on all hydrocarbon extraction systems at the manufacturing site in Rochester, NY, to achieve production goals and meet all production schedules from bulk input material to finished products. The technician is responsible for accurately inputting all required entries into Canix and other systems, including calculating weight at each stage. In collaboration with the Director of Extraction and Processing, the Extraction Technician will continuously improve efficiency and quality, and update SOPs to produce the best quality bulk oils and other cannabis products. This position manages a staff of technicians, leading a multi-shift operation to meet production, quality, safety, and financial demands, overseeing site hydrocarbon extraction activities and achieving key performance metrics. The role directs department personnel, building and maintaining a culture of high performance.

Requirements

  • 5+ years' experience with responsibility in a production/manufacturing setting (ideally dietary supplements, food, beverage and/or cannabis) including working as an individual contributor building manufacturing and technical expertise including proven project management skills.
  • Professional acumen coupled with functional leadership experience is required to drive high performance in a complex manufacturing operation.
  • General knowledge and understanding of HACCP, cGMPs, FDA (FCR 111, 117 and others as required), SQF, OSHA, EPA, PPE, sustainability, New York State OCM regulations and other regulatory, safety and compliance requirements.
  • Knowledge of all relevant federal, local and state laws, regulations, and operating guidelines.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team building skills to effectively lead staff.
  • Superior verbal and written skills. Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Must be able to work extended hours and weekends as required.
  • Must be computer literate, able to interface with PCs, and understand all software packages specifically used by Cirona Labs (Canix, Wherefore, Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Project, Outlook, etc.)
  • Must have good analytical and reasoning skills.
  • Must be able to interpret and apply all technical literature necessary to support job requirements.
  • Must be knowledgeable of all regulatory policies as they apply to Cirona Labs.
  • Ability to wear PPE (personal protective equipment) such as hair net, earplugs, beard net (if applicable), protective gloves, safety harness, safety glasses and slip resistant work shoes/boots.
  • Position requires the ability to stand; sit at a desk; walk around office and facility; lifting and carrying packages up to 50 pounds; utilizing fine dexterity; and reaching, kneeling, crawling, and twisting.
  • Also requires the ability to see; hear; and communicate by utilizing professional etiquette with all levels of associates and with external vendors.

Responsibilities

  • Opens/Closes facility in the morning with individually assigned security code.
  • Oversees all hydrocarbon extraction from fresh frozen flower bag packing, fresh frozen extraction, bulk oil post processing, and bulk oil storage.
  • Maintain and repair hydrocarbon extraction equipment as needed.
  • Organizes all hydrocarbon data inputs and inventory tracking from bulk oil created, to final packaged units.
  • Monitors consumables inventory for future ordering and maintaining inventory stock.
  • Orders raw materials, tools, and equipment needed for production.
  • Prepare samples and ensure data inputs are accurate.
  • Responsible to record all data in inventory system and ensure its accuracy.
  • Coordinate production schedules with the Director of Extraction and Processing.
  • Ensures quality control of hydrocarbon extraction and post processing.
  • Trains technicians on hydrocarbon extraction equipment, and any other existing or new processes outlined in department SOPs.
  • Manages extraction team for hydrocarbon extraction in ordinance with production schedule.
  • Initiates R&D for post processing hydrocarbon extracts such as sugars, badders, isolates, diamonds, shatters, etc.
  • Supervises employees in the department.
  • Provides input on employees annual evaluations.
  • Assist in the process of writing and/or updating SOP's.
  • Monitor refrigerated trailers on the exterior and interior of the facility.
  • Assist with material handling of natural gasses as needed.
  • Ensures required tools, materials, and equipment are available and in working order for production.

  • The Extraction Technician may be assigned responsibility for all areas of the facility in the absence of the Director of Extraction and Processing.
  • Works in other areas of the facility, performing tasks outside of the scope of the primary job functions as needed.
  • Complies with all company policies and procedures, ensures all employees in department are following all processes, policies and procedures.
  • Completes all required training and ensures employees in department have received and completed required training.
  • Must adhere to the following Operating Plans; including but not limited to: Document Management System Plan, Product Quality Plan and Batch Production Records.
  • Quarantine, Remediation, and Recall Procedures.
  • A cannabis product sampling, analysis, and testing plan based on risks associated with materials or organisms normally present during the production of cannabis products and in accordance with any guidance or regulations issued.
  • A quality assurance plan that establishes criteria to detect, identity, prevent and track cannabis contamination, mislabeling, and mispackaging incidents.
  • A cannabis and non-cannabis product recall plan that includes an annual mock recall test that ties into a traceability system.
  • Abide by cGMP and other processes.
