Pratt & Whitney is seeking an Externals Design Engineer Intern to support its Mechanical Systems, Externals, & Nacelles (MSEN) Engineering organization. The role supports design tasks, field investigations, development engine testing, and production engine assembly. The intern will create and modify externals designs to meet project requirements, collaborate with cross-functional teams, support build and teardown activities, and use engineering drawings and CAD/PDM tools such as Siemens NX and Teamcenter to develop models and drawings. MSEN is responsible for the design, development, and in-service support of power transmission systems, bearing compartments and rotor support design and analysis, oil and thermal management systems, engine externals packaging and architecture, and nacelles for commercial and military engines. Externals include components such as tubes, brackets, electrical harnesses, and mounting structures packaged on the outside of the engine. Externals designers interface with engine modules and integrate lubrication, electrical, fuel, and air systems. They also help troubleshoot operational engines and investigate findings during overhauls. The internship offers practical exposure to aerospace engineering and the company’s operations through challenging, meaningful projects. The intern will develop knowledge in blueprint interpretation, GD&T, externals component design, solid modeling, tolerance stack analysis, and root cause assessments; learn to engage cross-disciplinary teams and communicate technical topics; and practice planning and executing small design tasks. The position is onsite in East Hartford, Connecticut, and is for Summer 2027.
