External Design Coordinator - Injection Molds
About The Position
Hi-Tech Mold & Engineering, Inc. is seeking an External Design Coordinator to join its Engineering Team. The company produces injection molds for the plastics industry and works with Original Equipment Manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers to develop complex molding techniques for vehicles and consumer goods. The External Design Coordinator is the primary liaison between the company and external design providers. The role coordinates external mold design activities and ensures alignment with project timelines, company standards, customer requirements, and industry best practices. It applies technical judgment to evaluate and validate injection mold designs for feasibility and manufacturability, identify tooling risks, and confirm that issues are resolved before release. This is not a hands-on design position, but it requires a deep understanding of injection mold design principles and the ability to review CAD data. The position also supports dissemination of company standards, onboarding and development of external design partners, and continuous improvement of external design quality, consistency, and efficiency. The coordinator handles multiple projects in a fast-paced environment and may perform other duties as assigned. Requirements
- 7+ years of experience in injection mold design and/or mold manufacturing.
- Strong understanding of injection mold design principles and tooling practices.
- Ability to evaluate designs, identify risks, and make sound technical judgments.
- Comfort reviewing CAD data; primary design work is not required.
- Experience participating in design reviews and working with cross-functional teams or suppliers.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and coordinate across multiple stakeholders.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, and Teams.
- Detail-oriented with strong follow-through.
- Ability to perform the essential duties satisfactorily, with reasonable accommodation where applicable.

Responsibilities
- Coordinate with external design providers on new and ongoing projects.
- Ensure external design work aligns with project timelines and deliverable expectations.
- Review and validate injection mold designs for feasibility, manufacturability, and adherence to company standards and best practices.
- Identify tooling risks and ensure they are resolved before release.
- Participate in internal and customer design reviews.
- Validate and process documentation for purchase requisitions, including materials, hot runner systems, and commercial components.
- Review and release CAD data packages for manufacturing.
- Execute ERP workflows and supporting documentation for design release.
- Communicate company standards, updates, and expectations to external design providers.
- Support onboarding and development of new external design sources.
- Maintain and improve standard operating procedures related to external design coordination.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of external design quality, consistency, and efficiency.
- Handle multiple projects effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
