About The Position

Glendale Community College (GCC) is seeking equity-minded leaders committed to student success and closing equity gaps for its Full-Time Tenure-Track EOPS Counselor position. The ideal candidate will prioritize students, foster a collaborative learning environment, and value the contributions of a diverse student population. GCC is dedicated to hiring faculty who demonstrate equity-focused behaviors, including promoting race-consciousness, embracing human differences, supporting equity initiatives, holding themselves accountable for closing equity gaps, and fostering culturally responsive teaching and learning environments. This position is within a college that is a designated Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) serving a diverse student body. The role is a full-time, 10-month-per-year, tenure-track EOPS Counselor position with counseling assignments of thirty-five hours per week. Faculty are expected to dedicate sufficient time to professional responsibilities, including participation in professional activities, curriculum development, and campus committees. The assignment may include onsite, online, hybrid, evening, and/or Saturday hours. The anticipated start date is Spring 2027.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, or the equivalent
  • EOPS counselors hired after October 24, 1987, shall have completed a minimum of nine semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social, or economic disadvantages; OR completed six semester units or the equivalent of a college level counseling practicum or counseling fieldwork courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social, or economic disadvantages
  • In addition, an EOPS counselor hired after October 24, 1987, shall have two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social, or economic disadvantages.

  • Counseling or similar experience that reflects culturally responsive counseling practices.
  • Counseling and/or teaching experience that reflects innovative pedagogy, including active learning and culturally responsive teaching practices.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of counseling functions and activities pertaining to the operation of the Program.
  • Provides educational, career, and personal counseling support and referrals for a diverse student body regarding goal completion, basic skills, probation, financial assistance and how to succeed in college.
  • Implements services to meet the needs of students in various modalities, including in-person and online, drop-in, and group counseling.
  • Assists students in interpreting certificate, associate degree, and transfer-related requirements in written and computerized format.
  • Assists students in assessing, planning, and implementing their immediate and long-range goals.
  • Assists students in assessing their aptitudes, abilities, and interests and advising them regarding current and future employment trends.
  • May develop and teach a variety of Student Development courses online and/or in-person and workshops such as Orientation, Advisement, Career Planning, Goal Selection, Study Skills, Test Taking Techniques, and Note-Taking.
  • Contributes to innovation by working with instructional faculty cross-functionally in relation to academic programs and/or services.
  • May serve as a liaison to instructional and/or Student Services divisions and departments.
  • Participates in assessing Student Learning Outcomes, Program Learning Outcomes, and Program Reviews.
  • Keep accurate and appropriate records in accordance with the district and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Participate in campus governance and professional activities (e.g. committees, scheduling, leadership positions, faculty meetings, etc.).
  • Participates in professional development and continuing education activities that are designed to maintain and develop currency in the field, pedagogy (for traditional and online teaching and learning), and student support strategies, especially as they relate to student equity initiatives.
  • Work to achieve the college's Institutional, Program, and Student Learning Outcomes in support of Glendale Community College's Mission Statement.
  • Maintain regular posted office hours and be accessible to students.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.
  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Performs other counseling-related duties as assigned.
